Nov. 20 Officers Conference Call

CoSIDA Officers Call – November 20 I. Howie Davis of the Basketball Hall of Fame informed the Board about a new award to honor collegiate players on all levels. He discussed possible involvement of CoSIDA in the nomination and selection process. Ed Carpenter will follow-up with Howie as the award process progresses. II. President Alan Cannon (Texas A&M) said he had made some efforts to secure a key-note speaker for the Cleveland Convention and would report back on any progress. III. Cannon had also talked to Steve Richardson about the column he had written that many viewed as very negative toward sports information directors. Richardson said he felt it was constructive criticism and Cannon informed him that CoSIDA did not view it as constructive. After discussion, it was decided that Cannon will draft an official letter to Richardson from CoSIDA expressing the organization’s displeasure with the column. IV. Treasurer Dave Wohlhueter (Ithaca, N.Y.) reported that the prospective person to head up the CoSIDA exhibits was no longer interested. Wohlhueter said that finding someone to fill the position should be passed on to the Committee on Committees. V. Second Vice-President Rod Commons (Washington State) said that Fred Nuesch’s watch should be ready in the next few weeks and said he was uncertain why the process was taking so long. VI. Third Vice-President Joe Hernandez (Ball State) said he had received the notebook with all of the CoSIDA Awards information and would review it and get the process for the 2003 awards rolling in the next few weeks. VII. Wohlhueter had previously provided the Board with a five-year review of the Workshop revenue and expenses that he briefly reviewed, and he provided additional information on a possible increase in CoSIDA dues – showing that just the annual cost of providing the CoSIDA Directory and Digest exceeded the amount of current CoSIDA dues. Current dues are $35 active, $40 associate and $25 student. VIII. Secretary Jeff Hodges (North Alabama) said the December Digest was going in the mail. He also said that would be the first mailing going only to 2002-03 members who had paid or renewed. IX. Director of Marketing Ed Carpenter (Boston Univ.) said he had talked to Multi-Ad about them splitting their Digest ad space with the Baseball Blue Book. He also said that Sears was unaware that they had not paid their sponsorship for last year and was overnighting the money. Carpenter also said that CoSIDA would receive the full $20,000 of sponsorship. He said he would follow-up with the Sporting News and Big 12 about their unpaid sponsorship. X. Director of On-Line Services Maxey Parrish (Waco, Texas) said the new CoSIDA.com site was now up and running but that there were still several bugs to work out and some transition to still be done from the old site. There was no new business and the call was adjourned.
