STAMFORD, Conn., December 2, 2003CoSIDA released today the 2003 Academic All-Americaâ Football Team.  Craig Krenzel (Sterling Heights, MI) of Ohio State University, an Academic All-Americaâ selection for the second straight year, was named the AAA Team Member of the Year for the University Division.

A senior with a 3.68 grade point average in Molecular Genetics, Krenzel is ranked among the school’s career leaders in total offense and passing yardage. This year, he was OSU’s team captain and led the Buckeyes to a 10-2 regular season record.

Offensive lineman Rodney Reed (West Monroe, LA) of Louisiana State is a three-time Academic All-America Team member.  A starter in 41 straight games, Reed holds a 3.94 G.P.A. as an Accounting major and was featured in Sports Illustrated’s College Football issue as being one of the smartest players in college football.  Purdue’s wide receiver John Standeford, Jason Wright of Northwestern, Ball State’s Travis Barclay and place kicker Nick Browne of Texas Christian are also repeat first team offense Academic All-America Team members.

Emporia State’s Tyler Paul earned Academic All-America of the Year honors for the College Division.  A two-time first team Academic All-America, Paul is the leading rusher in the MIAA and 11th nationally at 131.1 yards per game.  He holds a 3.95 G.P.A. as an Accounting major.  Paul’s teammate, Brad Johnson, shares first team honors as ESU’s leading tackler.  Defensive back Reed Doughty (Johnstown, CO) of the University of Northern Colorado is the only sophomore on the College Division team.  He leads the

“The Academic All-Americaâ Teams program promotes the importance of balancing academics and athletics among college student-athletes.  Sports Information Directors take pride in recognizing those who strive to achieve balanced excellence both academically and athletically in their college careers,” says Dick Lipe, Academic All-America Chairperson.

The complete list of student-athletes named to the Academic All-America Football Team is attached (See Attachment A).

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom.  Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.  Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
