Sherwood Selected for Kenworthy Award
Dave Sherwood, who has served as the sports information director at Wingate University since 1985, has been selected to receive the Bob Kenworthy Award from the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Kenworthy Award is given annually to a CoSIDA member for civic involvement and accomplishments outside the sports information office. Kenworthy, the first recipient of the award in 1993, served as the sports information director at Gettysburg College for more than 25 years and actively participated in community and campus affairs.
Wingate has been a minister of youth at Wingate Baptist Church since 1990, and for the past eight summers, Sherwood has been actively involved with a youth group, which has attended a missions/work camp known as PASSPORT.
At PASSPORT, participants spend 12 hours each week working in the local community at a variety of tasks, including Habitat for Humanity land clearing, painting houses, weatherizing homes for the elderly and running backyard Bible clubs for children.
In addition, each youth group member is required to perform 15 hours of volunteer service per year to attend the camp, and Sherwood assists in developing different volunteer opportunities for the youth group throughout the year. Some of the activities include a ministry for children, a Christmas party for children, back-to-school parties and swimming.
In addition to his work with the youth group, Sherwood also assists in youth fellowship meetings, prayer breakfasts, field trips for youths and Operation Christmas Child, an outreach of Samaritan's Purse.
Sherwood has been chairman of the Union Baptist Association Youth Committee for six years. The UBA Youth Committee is a group of nine workers who meet throughout the year to plan events.
He is also a substitute teacher at the Wingate Baptist Church Youth Sunday School and has been an advisor for the Committed to Jesus Club at East Union Middle School.
In addition to his job as sports information director and his involvement with his church, Sherwood has served on the Academic All-America Committee since 1995 and served on the Membership Services Committee one year. He has helped Wingate University student-athletes earn Academic All-America honors 17 times, which is the second highest total among schools in the South Atlantic Conference.
Wingate leads the SAC with 29 South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Awards, which goes to an outstanding student-athlete in each of the 14 conference sponsored sports.
Sherwood also served as Wingate's interim softball coach from 1990-93, and has attended 12 CoSIDA Workshops.
