CoSIDA Awards Three Undergraduate Internships

Eastern Mennonite University, MidAmerica Nazarene University and Newberry College have been awarded the 2003-04 CoSIDA undergraduate internships. The awards are worth $2,500 and are designed to assist member offices by providing a stipend for an undergraduate assistant. Eastern Mennonite University sports information director Seth McGuffin has hired junior Michael Zucconi. Zucconi is a communications major who has worked in the sports information office in each of his first two years. He is a native of Bridgewater, Va., and a graduate of Turner-Ashby High School. While working in the Royals' SID office, Zucconi has handled media relations responsibilities for soccer, baseball and softball. Eastern Mennonite is an NCAA Division III institution that sponsors 17 varsity sports. The Royals compete in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the North Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association. MidAmerica Nazarene SID Lance Beeson has hired Lisa Koehn. Koehn is a junior marketing/business administration major from Montezuma, Kan. In 2002-03, she worked when needed in the sports information office on program sales, marketing and statistics. She played volleyball at MidAmerica in 2001 and 2002 but was forced to end her career because of injuries in the spring of 2003. MidAmerica Nazarene University is a liberal arts university sponsored by the Church of the Nazarene and accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The University is situated on a 105-acre campus in Olathe, Kan. MidAmerica's 14 varsity sports compete at the NAIA level and in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. Newberry College sports information director Ryan Rose will fill his position with Joel Lewis. Lewis, a business administration major, will be a senior in 2003-04. He is a former pitcher for the Indians' baseball squad. Lewis handles a variety of duties in the Newberry SID office, including public address announcing, official scoring, writing releases and updating the Newberry College athletics web site. Lewis is also an experienced broadcaster, having done play-by-play and color analyst work for WKDK, a local radio station. He has broadcast high school basketball, baseball and football games, as well as Newberry College football contests. Lewis, a native of Columbia, S.C., graduated from Spring Valley High School. Newberry is an NCAA Division II institution that sponsors 14 varsity sports and competes in the South Atlantic Conference. CoSIDA awards $45,000 annually through its scholarship and internship grant programs. The organization sponsors two post-graduate and three undergraduate scholarships that are awarded to individuals and two graduate and three undergraduate internships awarded to member institutions. The awards are meant to support the quality staffing of member offices and the development of young talent in collegiate sports information.
