U.S. Merchant Marine Names Emberley
Kings Point, N.Y. -- U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Director of Athletics Susan Petersen Lubow announced recently that Tom Emberley has been hired as the school’s sports information director. He will be in charge of the publicity efforts of all 23 of Kings Point’s NCAA Division III athletic programs.
Emberley comes to USMMA after a one-year stint at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pa., where he served as an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications. Emberley was as the primary media contact for the Explorers’ NCAA Division I men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball and women’s basketball teams, and was in charge of compiling, editing and designing the majority of La Salle’s athletic publications. He also led a successful All-America campaign during his tenure, as men’s soccer goalkeeper Stash Graham was named an Honorable-Mention choice by College Soccer News upon the completion of the 2002 campaign.
Prior to his stay at La Salle, Emberley served as a Sports Information Intern at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., during the 2001-02 academic year. He was in charge of the publicity efforts for nine of the Midshipmen’s 30 varsity sports, including their nationally-ranked rifle and intercollegiate sailing squads. Emberley was also actively involved in press-box management for Navy’s football team, while coordinating statistical efforts during home basketball contests and producing game-day press notes for the nationally-ranked men’s lacrosse team.
Emberley got his start in the media-relations field in the Fall of 2000 as an Athletic Media Relations Assistant at College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. While there, he was the primary media contact for the women’s soccer team, which advanced to its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament and hosted a first-round contest. Emberley also provided game-day assistance to the Crusaders’ football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball squads.
A native of Fitchburg, Mass., Emberley is a 2001 graduate of Western New England College in Springfield, Mass., where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport Management. He played football for two seasons for the Golden Bears, and assisted in WNEC’s Athletic Communications office throughout his time at the school. Emberley currently resides in Queens Village, N.Y.
