Sept. 4 Board Call Minutes

I. Katie Hyde (Millsport) and Dick Lipe (Chairman of the Academic All-America Committee) gave the board an update on the sponsorship search. Millsport has continued to present the program to a variety of potential sponsors and is focusing on others in the next few weeks. Hyde said Millsport has received generous support from several members of the Academic All-America Hall of Fame with contacts at several potential sponsors. Hyde said the selection date for the Academic All-America Hall of Fame would be moved back to mid-February, with nomination forms going out October 1. II. Past President Pete Moore (Syracuse) said he was close to a decision from the Site Selection Committee on a location for the 2008 CoSIDA Convention, but he was still waiting on a few more votes to come in from Committee members. He said he would report back to the Board with a decision on the next Board call. III. President Tammy Boclair (Vanderbilt) gave an update on the site visit to Calgary and said she had already been given several leads on potential Kickoff Luncheon speakers. IV. Boclair said the Cleveland Workshop evaluation forms were continuing to come in and she said they would be compiled and the results distributed. V. Boclair discussed the possibility of a CoSIDA Basketball Tournament this year but Treasurer Dave Wohlhueter (Ithaca, N.Y.) said there would be no tournament after the NCAA won its appeal. VI. Boclair said that Howie Davis of the Basketball Hall of Fame would report to the Board in November about the Bob Cousey Award. VII. Boclair gave board members their liaison assignments for the CoSIDA committees. VIII. Director of On-Line Services Maxey Parrish (Waco, Texas) again discussed charging for on-line job advertisements. His proposal is to charge $50 for CoSIDA members and $100 for non-members. The proposal will be voted on on the October Board call. He said their was a lot of job activity on the website. First Vice President Rod Commons (Washington State) said the Board needs to educate the membership as to what other national organizations charge for dues and convention registration and how much more CoSIDA provides for the money. IX. Parrish said Verizon's named is being removed from the Academic All-America program references, other than historical listings. X. Boclair said currently CoSIDA can't put photos on its website but that she was talking to ICS about incorporating that into CoSIDA's agreement. XI. Commons said he was excited about the possibilities for the 2004 Convention in Calgary. He said Jack Neumann at Calgary was doing a great job. He said the work on the workshop program was continuing and he said he would like to see the Cleveland Workshop evaluations. XII. Second Vice President Joe Hernandez said work had already begun on the Workshop Social and he felt things were in good shape. He said there would be periodic calls throughout the year with the Host ommtteand the Social Committee. XIII. Wohlhueter said membership was already in excess of 1,000 and that invoices had been mailed to the members who had not already renewed for 2003-04. He said he was also working on CoSIDA's IRS report. XIV. Boclair said that Texas A&M-Kingsville was having a Roast in honor of Fred Nuesch on Sept. 18. A Fred and Joan Nuesch scholarship has been established at the school and CoSIDA is providing a $1,000 donation for the scholarship fund. XV. Boclair discussed the possible reduction of scholarship amounts for 2004-05. Wohlhueter gave the Board a brief history on the CoSIDA Scholarship Program. He said CoSIDA originally presented $10,000 in post-graduate scholarships but that amount grew over the years due to additional income from CoSIDA Basketball Tournaments and other sources - which are no longer providing income for the program. Wohlhueter made a motion that CoSIDA reduce the amount of money in the scholarship program from $45,000 to $25,000 for 2004-05, and allow the Scholarship Committee to decide how that money will be distributed. Seconded by Commons and passed unanimously. XVI. Director of Marketing Ed Carpenter (Boston University) asked that CoSIDA provide some complimentary ad space for Collegiate Imaging due to a mix-up in displaying a banner as part of their sponsorship at the Cleveland Workshop. The Board agreed. Ed said he would also check to make sure all Cleveland sponsors had paid. XVII. Secretary Jeff Hodges (North Alabama) said the CoSIDA Directory was at the printer and was expected back by late September. He said the October Digest was also nearing completion and would go to the printer over the weekend.
