Mitchell Moves to Henderson State
After serving 10 years as an assistant sports information director at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Zanesville, Ohio, native Troy Mitchell has been named sports information director at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Ark.
Henderson State, located 60 miles west of Little Rock, is a NCAA Division II institution that participates in the Gulf South Conference.
A 1985 graduate of John Glenn High School, Mitchell attended Ohio University and earned his bachelor’s degree in health and human services in 1989.
While at Ohio Univ., Mitchell served as a volunteer student assistant under former SID Glenn Coble. Mitchell worked with the Bobcat baseball, volleyball and wrestling teams and worked game day operations for football and basketball games.
Prior to his appointment at ULM, Mitchell worked for two years at Northwestern State and Tulane University.
Mitchell has also worked numerous events such as the 1992 Olympic Trials in New Orleans, the 1992 and 1993 Sugar Bowls, New Orleans Saints football games, and several conference tournament events.
For the past 12 years, the 36-year-old has been the coordinator of the Independence Bowl statistics crew which earned the title of the nation’s best stat crew in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 according to the NCAA Bowl game evaluations. The 2000 I-Bowl was played during blizzard conditions in Shreveport, La.
Mitchell has earned numerous awards both on the national and state levels for his media guides and fact sheets, including earning first place from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association last July, for best fact sheet.
Besides his sports information responsibilities at ULM, Mitchell developed many promotional events, gathered prize sponsorships, and assisted with fund raising. In April, Mitchell brought to Monroe the Famous San Diego Chicken which drew a crowd of more than 2000 fans.
During is 16 years in the business, Mitchell has worked with numerous
coaches including LSU Baseball Coach Smoke Laval, Jim Wells of Alabama, Mike Bianco of Mississippi, head baseketball coach Perry Clark of Miami, and head women’s basketball coach Kristi Curry of
Purdue.
Mitchell has also met and worked with numerous sports figures including, Dick Vitale, Tim Brando, Mel Kiper, Chris Fowler, Clyde Drexler, Jim Valvano, O.J. Simpson, Ken Stabler, Todd Christensen, just too name a few.
