Smith Named Interim SID at A&M-CC

Paul Smith has been named interim sports information director at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Athletics Dan Viola announced. Smith, a native of Flint, Mich., has been serving as the assistant sports information director since late August. Prior to joining the Islanders, Smith was a graduate assistant in the Sports Information office at Delta State University, and served in many capacaties at the University of Arkansas-Monticello, working with the softball team, serving as interim sports information director, intern assistant to the director of athletics, and also as the radio play-by-play announcer for all University of Arkansas-Monticello sports during the 2002-2003 season. “Any search that we do takes on a unique set of circumstances,” said Viola. “After interviewing three different candidates for this position, it was my feeling, and the shared feeling of our other administrative staff, that although Paul had only been here three weeks, he would be a good fit for this position on an interim basis for the 2003-2004 academic year. During his short stay with us, he has done a remarkable job getting to know our coaches as well as interacting with our local media. I think Paul has a bright future as our interim sports information director. Now we will begin our search process to fill the assistant’s position.” “I’d like to thank Dan Viola, all our coaches and athletes, and our local media for expressing their confidence in my ability to do this job,” said Smith. “I know this will be a learning experience for me, but it will be made easier by the fact that everyone here has done such a wonderful job making me feel at home here in Corpus Christi.” Smith earned his bachelor's degree in speech from the University of Arkansas-Monticello in 2003. He is a 1998 graduate of the Valley School in Flint, Mich.
