Schabert Named Ass't SID at UTSA

Matt Schabert, a 2002 graduate of Tennessee Tech University, has been named Assistant Sports Information Director at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He replaces Erin Molina, who recently accepted a position at ESPN. Schabert will be the primary media contact for the Roadrunners’ women’s basketball and baseball teams and serve as the “voice” of the women’s basketball team on Roadrunner radio.

“We’re extremely happy to have Matt join our office. He brings a great deal of experience and has a family background in sports information and journalism,” said UTSA Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Rick Nixon. “ We were impressed with his skills and experience and felt he was a good fit to join our staff.”

Schabert comes to UTSA after a one-year internship in the Virginia Tech sports information office. At Virginia Tech, he was the primary contact for the Hokies’ men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams and had secondary responsibilities with the football, basketball, baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse teams. He served as the media coordinator during the 2003 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship first round in Blacksburg and also played a vital role during Virginia Tech’s hosting of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament first and second rounds.

Schabert was also the coordinator for the Virginia SID University Division all-State team voting process. In addition, his responsibilities included press conference logistics, baseball, softball and women’s lacrosse statistics and general office duties.

Prior to Virginia Tech, Schabert served as a student assistant in the Tennessee Tech sports information office under his father Rob. The elder Schabert received his 25-year award from CoSIDA at the Cleveland workshop in 2002. At Tennessee Tech, while completing his B.S. degree in English/journalism, Schabert assisted in a variety of capacities, including being the primary contact for women’s soccer during the 1998-2002 seasons. He was also the primary women’s basketball contact during the 1998-99 and 2001-2002 seasons and was the baseball media contact in 1999.

In February 2002, he stepped into the role of full-time assistant while the elder Schabert volunteered at the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games. He also worked closely with the Tennessee Tech radio network, including some on-air duties for basketball and baseball games.

In addition to his duties with Division I athletics, Schabert also served as a media center coordinator at the 2003 AAU Junior Olympic Games at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. In that role, Schabert promoted 21 sports during a three-week period and worked closely with the Detroit News in getting special sections on the event published each day. He has also worked as an usher and security at the Gaylord Entertainment Center and The Coliseum in Nashville, Tenn., for six years, serving as field crew security at Tennessee Titans’ home games.

Schabert, 24, is married to the former Jennifer Osburn of Cookeville, Tenn. The couple has a five-year-old son, Jacob.
