Stabley Sr. Inducted Into HOF

The late Fred Stabely Sr. was inducted into the Michagan Sports Hall of Fame last week.  Stabley was Michigan State's sports information director from 1948-80, and Spartan Stadium's press box is named for him.

Joe DeLamielleure, Pat LaFontaine and Chris Spielman will be among 10 people inducted into the HOF as well.

Jim Abbott, Bill Davidson, Herb Deromedi, Mike Ilitch, Mike Lucci and George Puscas round out the class to be inducted at the Renaissance Center.

DeLamielleure, a former Michigan State star, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year. He was a standout lineman for the Buffalo Bills from 1973-79.

LaFontaine, who grew up in Waterford, went into the Hockey Hall of Fame this year after a 15-year career with the New York Islanders and Rangers and Buffalo Sabres.

Spielman had a stellar career with the Detroit Lions before ending his career in Cleveland.

Abbott, a Flint native and former Michigan pitcher, won the Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete in 1988 despite being born without a right hand.

Davidson owns the Detroit Pistons, Shock and Fury as well as the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Ilitch owns the Detroit Red Wings and Tigers.

Lucci, a former Lions star, was one of the top players in the NFL in the late 1960s and early 1970s.  Puscas has written for the Detroit Free Press for more than 60 years.
