Johnson Named Ass't AD at Bridgeport.

Ken Johnson, Jr., has been promoted to assistant director of athletics at the University of Bridgeport, announced Director of Athletics Jay Moran. Johnson, the director of sports information at the university, will continue those duties and will assume a new role as the compliance officer for the university’s 200 student-athletes.

Over the last year, Johnson has managed the media relations program for the University’s 10 intercollegiate athletic teams and has helped the program receive additional media coverage in the greater Fairfield County area and beyond. His other duties include assisting with event management, redesigning and maintaining the athletics web site, and assisting with the end-of-year sports banquet. In addition, he served as the play-by-play announcer for all road men’s basketball games in the 2003-2004 season, which were broadcast on WPKN 89.5 FM and online.

Johnson came to Bridgeport after serving as the sports information director at Manhattanville College for the previous two years.  During his time there, he was the primary contact for the college’s 17 intercollegiate athletic teams and handled all media relations and event management duties for every team.  He served as the tournament director for the NYSWCAA Field Hockey Championship and the first round of the NYSWCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.  In addition, Johnson was also the media director at the 2003 NCAA Division III Women’s Ice Hockey Quarterfinals in Rye, N.Y.

Johnson’s other experience includes stints at the SBC FUTURES Golf Tour, the Big East Conference and at Brown University.  While at the Big East, Johnson worked as a communications assistant and was responsible for serving as the primary contact for seven of the conference sports, as well as the secondary contact for the nationally-recognized women’s basketball conference. 

At Brown University, he was named the interim assistant sports information director and was the primary media contact for 13 of the University’s 36 intercollegiate teams, which including traveling with the high-profile men’s ice hockey team.  Johnson served as the media coordinator for the 1999 ECAC Division I Women’s Ice Hockey Championship and also represented Brown University at various NCAA Championships, including the 1998 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship in Honolulu, Hawaii.

A 1998 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Johnson has a bachelor's degree in sport management and is a native of South Dennis, Mass. He currently resides in Derby, Conn.
