Cal State Monterey Bay brought experience to their staff with the naming of Mike Bond as coordinator of sports information and marketing. Bond, who has 17 years of experience, was most recently the assistant sports information director at the University of Texas-Pan American during the 2003-04 school year.
While at Texas-Pan American, Bond helped to establish a new athletic Web page, and coordinated the NCAA Division I All-Independent selections for men’s and women’s golf, women’s basketball and women’s tennis and the NCAA Division I, II and III All-Independent selections for softball. He was also the lone staff member in the office over the last four months of the school year.
“Mike will provide experience and energy to our Sports Information Department,” said Director of Athletics Bill Trumbo. “His experience in the CCAA (California Collegiate Athletic Association) will be an asset to the growth of our program.”
Bond got his start in sports information as a student assistant and then volunteer assistant at Eastern Michigan from 1987-99. At EMU, he took statistics at all home men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball games, updated records for all sports, was the primary contact for men’s and women’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track (1994-99) and women’s tennis (1997-99). He was also responsible for press releases, and the design and publication of media guides and assisting in the daily office operations.
From January 2000 to the end of May 2003, Bond was the assistant sports information director at San Francisco State. While at SFSU, he was the primary contact for men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, women’s basketball, wrestling, men’s and women’s track, baseball and softball. He helped to maintain the athletic Web site, was co-director of meet results and director of press box operations for the 2001 CCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and tri-meet director of the 2003 RMAC/NCAA Division II West Regional Wrestling Championships.
In addition, all three of his wrestling media guides were ranked among the top 20 in the country by Amateur Wrestling News and among the top six in the country by Wrestling USA.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity that has been presented to me,” said Bond. “Being in charge of a sports information office is something that I have worked towards during my career. The thing that really impressed me about Cal State Monterey Bay was the fact that they joined the CCAA. This is an outstanding conference, and their joining told me that they were serious about their athletics.”
A native of Warren, Mich., Bond has a bachelor's degree. in history with a minor in English language and literature from Eastern Michigan. He is single and resides in Marina.
