St. John's Promotes Scianna to Assoc. AD

The St. John's University Athletic Department announced today that Dominic Scianna has been promoted to associate athletic director for external affairs effective immediately. Scianna will be responsible for all athletic department marketing and communications endeavors and assume responsibilities in working with University partners.

Scianna, 44, has been employed at St. John's for nine years and has been head of the Athletic CommunicationsDepartment serving as media relations director since 1996. He was promoted to associate athletic director for communications in 2001.

"Dom is a consistent contributor, always quick with ideas and ways to effectively implement. His experience and commitment will all but ensure success in his new role," said Brenda Majeski, St. John's vice president for marketing and communications and senior associate athletic director for external affairs.

In addition to his new role, Scianna will continue his duties as director of athletic communications through the end of the academic school year.

During his tenure at St. John's he has developed strong relationships with national and New York media outlets, worked closely with Madison Square Garden and ESPN radio (1050AM) in promoting and publicizing St. John's athletics and won numerous awards for media guide content, cover art and design as voted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

His marketing background comes from extensive training during an eight-year career as a senior account executive with Edelman Worldwide Inc., a public relations and sports marketing firm in Scianna's hometown of Chicago. While at Edelman, Scianna worked on Fortune 500 accounts with Philip Morris USA, NIKE Inc., Kraft Foods, Brown Forman Beverage Company and the 1994 World Cup Soccer Opening Ceremonies.

In 2001, Scianna served as media relations coordinator for the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championships at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York hosted by St. John's and the Big East Conference. He and a volunteer staff of 300 received high commendation from the NCAA Championship Committee for their efforts.

Scianna and his wife Kerri have been married for 18 years and reside in Bayside, N.Y., with their two children, Peter, 14, a freshman at St. Mary's High School in Manhasset and Anthony, 11, a sixth grader at Nathaniel Hawthorne School.
