CoSIDA Board Meeting Minutes

COSIDA BUSINESS MEETING
December 16,  2004
I. President Rod Commons (Washington State) said
that Director of On-line Services Maxey Parrish
(Waco, Texas) said that he had begun sending blast
emails with links to stories on the CoSIDA website.
Commons said, however, that he had not been
receiving them. Several other board members also
said they had not received them, while several had.
Commons and others said they were going to check to
see if SPAM protectors might be rejecting the emails. 
II. Commons said an Academic All-America Hall of
Fame Presentation Banquet has been discussed but it
was time to make a decision on what to do. He asked
Treasurer Dave Wohlhueter (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Past
Presidents Tammy Boclair (Vanderbilt) and Alan
Cannon (Texas A&M) to develop a list of scenarios
for a possible banquet at the Philadelphia Workshop
on Saturday night. He asked for various scenarios
based on projected costs and the possibility of
sponsorship money becoming available. Director of
Marketing Ed Carpenter (Boston Univ.) said ESPN had
first right of refusal on sponsorship of the Hall of
Fame and he said he would contact them. 
III. Commons appointed a task force to keep the
board updated and on top of legislative issues that
arise. He appointed Charles Bloom and Ray Simmons as
co-chairs of the task force. Other members include
Ryan Morrison, Nick Joos, Doug Dull and Roy Pickerill. 
IV. The proposed NCAA legislation limiting media
guides to 200 pages was discussed. Second Vice
President Doug Dull (Maryland) asked where the
membership stood on the issue. Bloom said the issue
primarily concerned only Division I football, but
there was discussion that limitaions would filter
down. Bloom said the Southeastern Conference had
proopsed an amendment to increase the number of
pages to 248. 
V. First Vice President Joe Hernandez (Ball State)
said that the review of the on-line Academic
All-America nominating and voting process was
continuing. He said several suggestions had been
made since the group's last call and that ICS had
made all of the changes by Dec. 10. He said within
the next two weeks they expected to see another
demonstration. He said that Academic All-America
committee chair Dick Lipe felt that the compliance
verification was important and wanted it maintained.
They felt the whole process could be up and running
for the spring programs. 
VI. Hernandez said he had emailed the board an
updated list of panels for the Philadelphia
Workshop. He said he would talk to Program Committee
chair Dennis O'Donnell to develop plans for the
panels and table topics.
VII. Dull said he was continuing to work with the
host committee in Philadelphia on the social schedule.
VIII. Bloom said nominations were slowly coming in
for the various CoSIDA awards. He said a nomination
form for the Lester Jordan Award was also being
published in the Digest and posted on the CoSIDA
website.
IX. Wohlhueter said he had received the first
sponsorship check from ESPN.
X. Wohlhueter said CoSIDA had paid Millsport $9,000
for the Academic All-America Hall of Fame dinner in
San Diego and he said Millsport was asking for an
additional $21,000 for dinner expenses, as well as
money they deemed they were owed from the previous
Academic All-America management agreement with CoSIDA.
XI. Secretary Jeff Hodges (North Alabama) said
membership for 2004-05 was now at 1,811, He said the
January Digest lead story was ESPN's sponsorship of
the Academic All-America program. He said he had
provided an updated membership list to Jeff Rubin at
ICS to update the on-line directory and to have to
use for testing of the AAA nominating process.
XII. Parrish said he had recently posted 22 news
stories on cosida.com, as well as four Academic
All-America and eight Academic All-District teams.
XIV. There was discussion about helping an SID who
was dealing with major medical issues. The board was
going to gather additional information and see how
CoSIDA could best help.
