2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Soccer Team

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior forward Jason Garey of the University of Maryland and senior forward Nathan Micklos of the University of Rochester, each of whom led their team into the NCAA tournament, head the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men's Soccer Team, as selected by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A Gonzales, La. native, Garey helped Maryland to the No. 1 seed in the Division I tournament, is a repeat selection on the Academic All-America first team and is one of the leading candidate for the Hermann Trophy as
the top college soccer player in the country. In the classroom, Garey has compiled a 3.47 grade point average finance and will graduate in three-and-a-half years.
Micklos led Rochester to an unbeaten, untied regular season (16-0-0) with 15 goals and added 10 assists for 40 points. The Palantine, Ill. resident is a two-time NSCAA All-American and Rochester's all-time career scoring leader with 57 goals and 26 assists for 140 points. Micklos has a 3.75 GPA and will graduate in December with a dual degree in political science and history with a minor in philosophy.
The University Division first team includes three players from the University of New Mexico, the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Division I tournament. They are senior defenders Matt Wootton and Ben Ashwill along with senior forward Jeff Rowland. In addition, New Mexico senior midfielder Brandon Moss was selected to the third team.
The College Division first team features four players with perfect 4.0 grade point averages, including Ryan Sheffler of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cory Thigpen of Ohio Northern University, Josh
Warren of Ohio Wesleyan University, and Andrew Winters of St. Norbert College.
Four athletes earned first-team Academic All-America honors for the second straight year: Matt Groenwald of St. John’s (N.Y.), Matthew Davey of UC San Diego, Scott Schwartz of Trinity (Texas) and Justin Risma of Wheaton (Ill.)
The Academic All-America® Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom.  Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America; a 2,000-member organization consisted of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.  Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
