Ask CoSIDA - FERPA Guidelines

Each semester we release an Athletic Directors' honor roll that lists all of our student-athletes who achieve a 3.0 GPA for that semester.  I regularly post this and other academic-based awards (Academic All-Conference, coaching organization teams, etc.) to our web site and list the student-athletes GPA.

Although I and my AD understand the concept of FERPA, our registrar raised a fuss about this practice which obviously makes the job of promoting our academic successes tougher.  Through some on-campus discussions it has been recommended that we obtain a release from each student-athlete prior to releasing such information.

My questions are how many other SIDs have run into such an issue and what have the done about it?  Also does anyone have a sample blanket (cover for the whole year) release that our student-athletes can sign to make nomination/promotion for such awards possible?

I will be glad to compile and share what I hear in the next few days.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Chris
