George Mason’s Looze, Salve Regina’s Cirella Head 2004-2005
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americaâ Baseball Teams
Senior infielder Chris Looze of George Mason University and senior outfielder Eric Cirella of the Salve Regina University head the 2004-2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americaâ Baseball Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Looze was selected as the Academic All-America of the Year in the University Division. A product of Amherst, Mass., Looze is a three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection. He was instrumental in the Patriots earning a 35-19 record this season, batting .307, with 14 home runs, 64 RBI and 47 runs scored. Looze is George Mason's career leader in home runs (46) and RBI (201) and ranks in the school's career top 10 in hits (214), doubles (49), batting average (.330), slugging percentage (.625) and total bases (405).
In 2004, Looze was selected a second team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and ranked fifth in the nation in RBI per game. Looze owns a 3.90 grade point average in biology.
There were four repeat members from last year on the university division team, all of whom were first team selections: senior designated hitter Brett Anderson (College of Charleston), junior catcher Brad Canada (Bradley), junior outfielder Phillip Coker (College of Charleston) and junior infielder Ryan Parker (Indiana).
Cirella, a native of Jamestown, R.I., was selected as the Academic All-America of the Year in the College Division. Cirella was named to the Academic All-America® team the past three seasons at three different positions – catcher, infielder and now outfielder. He leads NCAA Division III in batting average (.504; 65-for-129) and bases on balls (49 in 43 games; 1.14 per game) and was named to the All-New England first team for the second consecutive year.
“This is really an incredible honor,” said Cirella. “I am humbled just to be on the Academic All-America® Baseball Team.”
Cirella graduated magna cum laude (3.87 grade point average) with a degree in business administration four days before he and his Salve Regina teammates competed in the 2005 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships.
Besides Cirella, there were five repeat members on the college division team. Steve Broski (Augustana (Ill.)), Ben Sherer (Gustavus-Adolphus) and Matt Keener (Southern Indiana) were named to the first team, while Mike Larson (California (Pa.) was named to the second team and Tom McCullen (Rowan) was a third-team selection.
“The team accomplishments will always stand separate and above individual recognition, but I am incredibly gratified with this achievement,” added Cirella.
Others on the University Division Academic All-America first team squad were Bowling Green’s Burke Badenhop, Texas A & M – Corpus Christi’s Trey Hearne and Jaime Landin, Tennessee’s Chase Headley, West Virginia’s Lee Fritz, and Navy’s Trevor Thompson. The second team was comprised of James Burok of Old Dominion, Jason Determann of LSU, Aaron Izaryk of Maine, Kyle Bohm of Michigan, Kyle Dygert of Ball State, Mike Priest of Campbell, Kurtis Wells of Central Michigan, Daniel Bruce of Nebraska, Kory Knell of BYU, Gabe Scott of Alabama, and Chris Carlson. Rounding out the University Division Academic All-America team were third team members Brian Kappel of Princeton, John Meloan of Arizona, Joe Muich and Phil Napolitan of Wichita State, Andy Hudak of Bowling Green, Andy Hunter of Minnesota, Steve Maiolo of Duquesne, Tommy Manzella of Tulane, Matthew Butler of Michigan, Drew Stubbs of Texas and Zach Daeges of Creighton.
Dietz was joined on the College Division Academic All-America first team were Central Missouri State’s Danny Powers, Central (Iowa)’s Adam Duerfeldt, Augsburg’s Darren Ginther, Lynchburg’s Lucas Jones, Salisbury’s Nick Pegelow, Widener’s Jamie Schild, LeTourneau’s Damon Stokes and Elmhurst’s Pat Moore. The second team was comprised of Scott Akamine of Chapman, Mike Burnett of SUNY Cortland, Ross Boudreaux of Southern Arkansas, Chris Bell of Saint John’s (Minn.), Alex Shelton of Westminster, Andrew Wong of Lawrence, Kevin Haney of Embry-Riddle (Fla.), Noah Welte of Thomas More, and Mike Turchan of Baldwin-Wallace. Rounding out the College Division Academic All-America team were third team members Brad Lightsey of Delta State, Darrell Taylor of Apprentice, Adam Braveman of Rochester, Ryan Corning of Washington (Mo.), Rafael Garabis of John Carroll, Justin Gordon of Emory, Chuck Brehm of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Andrew Handoff of Edgewood, Mike Welch of York (Pa.), and Walt Goedkoop of Juniata.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
