2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large Teams Announced

WALTHAM, Mass.--  Seniors Courtney Koester of Northwestern University and Sarah Dance of Truman State head the 2004-2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America women's At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association.
        The women's At-Large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, golf, gymnastics, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, and water polo.
        Koester, a native of Richmond, Ind., was selected as the Academic All-America of the Year in the University Division,  The All-American midfielder led the Wildcats to the 2005 NCAA Lacrosse championship. A Computer Engineering and Economics double major with a 3.81 grade point average, the fifth-year senior led Northwestern to a perfect season (21-0) and a national championship in the program's fourth year of existence. The three-time all-conference selection keyed the best defense in the nation, a unit that allowed only 5.90 goals per game. Koester also ranked among the NCAA leaders with 73 draw controls.
        "It is a tremendous honor for me to accept this prestigious award," Koester said when informed of the award. "There are so many outstanding and deserving candidates, and I am extremely flattered to be able to represent Northwestern  University in such a positive manner. Northwestern has provided me with incredible athletic and academic opportunities."
        Dance, a native of Lincoln, Nebraska, was selected as the Academic All-America of the Year in the College Division. The standout swimmer is a three-time Academic  All-America First-Team selection who compiled a 4.0 grade point average as an Exercise Science major.  She earned 28 All-America honors during her outstanding career, including seven national championships as a member of the 400 and 800-yard freestyle relay teams. She also won the prestigious NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship and an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.
        "It is a great honor to receive this award," said Dance,  "I've had a lot of great things happen to me this year and this is at the top of list. I would like to thank CoSIDA and ESPN the Magazine for this wonderful honor."
        Joining Koestler on the University Division Academic All-America first team were senior swimmer Samantha Arsenault of Georgia, senior diver Cassandra Cardinell of Indiana, senior swimmer Deirdre Dlugonski of Penn State and senior swimmer Taylor Simpson of Gardner Webb. Goalkeeper Naomi Campano Radio of the Mount St. Mary's lacrosse team was also honored, along with senior tennis players Megan Bradley of the University of Miami, Marle Matrka of Coastal Carolina and Story Tweedie-Yates of Southern Methodist. Junior tennis player Jennifer Magley of Florida was also honored.        
        Juniors Amy Cochran (Keene, N.H.) of Vermont and Alison Crocker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) of Dartmouth join senior Martina Stursova (Policka, Czech Republic) of New Mexico as the skiing representatives on the team. Senior Leah Gordon (Wausau, Wis.) of Wisconsin's crew team and senior Katie Lesko (Dayton, Ohio) of Dayton's rowing team round out the first team.
        Dance was joined on the College Division At-Large team by teammate and classmate Diana Betsworth (swimming), Jill Bog (swimming) and Sarah Peck (swimming) of Denison University, Kate Creasy (tennis) of Greensboro College, Serena Fadel (swimming) of Whitworth, Holly Glover (golf) of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Megan Hulick (tennis) of Grove City College, Mandy Kaempf (skiing) of  Alaska-Anchorage, Jennifer Lowe (rifle) of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Megan Michael (tennis) of King's College, Amanda Parker (gymnastics) of Gustavus Adolphus, Greta Trotman (tennis) of Barry University, Jennifer Walker (field hockey) of Bentley College, and Samantha White swimming) of Emory University.
        In addition to Dance, the other repeat first-team selections were Campano Radio, Stursova, Betsworth and Parker.
        To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.  Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
