Former University of Minnesota Director of Media Relations Bill Crumley passed away this morning in Brainerd, Minn. Crumley, 43, had been missing since early Wednesday evening after boating on Gull Lake.
“This is a very difficult day for the Gopher athletic family,” Director of Athletics Joel Maturi said. “Bill was a long-time employee of the department and a close friend to many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Crumley worked in the Gopher athletic department for 17 years before leaving in the summer of 2002 to become the Director of Marketing and Communications for Madden’s Resort and Convention Center in Brainerd. A 1987 graduate of the university with a degree in communications, Crumley started his career at the U of M in 1985 as a student manager for the football team under then-head coach Lou Holtz before becoming a graduate assistant in the sports information office in 1989.
In 1990, Crumley was hired full-time by the men’s department as an assistant sports information director where he worked primarily with the sports of men’s hockey, baseball and men’s golf. He later became the primary contact for the Gopher men’s basketball program prior to the 1994-95 season. Crumley remained in his assistant’s position for 10 years before being named director of media relations for Men’s Athletics in August of 2000. He recently returned from the 2005 U.S. Open Golf Championship in Pinehurst, N.C., where he served as the interview coordinator at the 18th green for the seventh consecutive year.
Crumley, a Minneapolis native and graduate of Washburn High School, is survived by his wife Kimberly and two children, Ben and Ali. Funeral arrangements are pending.
