ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s Track/Cross Country Teams
WALTHAM, Mass.-- Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J.), a graduate student from the University of Michigan, and Kristin Anderson (Richfield, Ohio), a senior from Central Missouri State University, earned top honors on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All–America® women’s track & field and cross country teams announced Monday.
Gallo repeated as the Academic All-America of the Year in the University Division while Anderson earned the same honor on the college division side.
Gallo, a six-time track and field All-America, finished sixth in the 1500 meters at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships, third in the mile at the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships and was also a member of Michigan’s NCAA champion distance medley relay team. Owner of a 4.0 grade point average (both undergraduate and graduate) as an accounting major, Gallo was the 2005 Big Ten Athlete of the Year and the Great Lake Regional Athlete of the Year.
Anderson, who was a third-team honoree in 2004 before earning a spot on the first team this year, was the Division II national champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as well as an All-America in cross country (15th place at the NCAA Division II Championships). She was the top point-scorer at the 2005 MIAA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships, a two-time MIAA cross country champion and an indoor track All-America in the 5000. In the classroom, Anderson amassed a 3.97 GPA as a marketing major.
Gallo was one of eight athletes selected for the Academic All-America first team for the second straight year, with the others being Kim Clark (Kansas), Laura Gerraughty (North Carolina), Jenny Lake (South Carolina), Gisele Oliviera (Clemson), Maureen Scott (Arkansas), Heather Hamilton (Minnesota-Duluth) and Laura Verdegan (Wisconsin-Stout).
The University Division first team also included Annie Bersagel (Wake Forest), Caroline Bierbaum (Columbia), Jenn Feenstra (Georgia State), Sarah Klein (North Dakota State), Renee Metivier (Colorado), Serena Ramsey (Missouri), Faith Thompson (Buffalo) and Shannon Marie Wommack (Tennessee at Chattanooga).
Also named to the College Division first team were Elaine Binkley (Denison), Shauna Birchard (Nebraska-Kearney), Jenn Campbell (Williams), Amy Cate (Carson-Newman), Michelle Forbes (George Fox), Laura Hamilton (Calvin), Rebecca Lock (RPI), Allison Macsas (Tampa), Marci Miller (South Dakota), Megan Nelson (Pittsburg State), Erin Powell (Nebraska Wesleyan) and Brigid Power (St. Thoma, Minn.).
Eleven of the 30 first-team selections have perfect 4.00 GPAs for their collegiate career, and 32 of the 90 total selections have been perfect in the classroom. Combined, the average GPA for the 30 first-teamers was a remarkable 3.939!
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
