Stephen F. Austin State University named Robert Hill as athletics director to succeed Steve McCarty Thursday. McCarty recently announced his retirement as athletics director at the university effective Aug. 31. Hill will take over the duties effective Sept. 1.
"I am extremely honored to be given this opportunity to lead the athletic department at SFA. We will continue to do everything possible to produce championships on the playing field and graduate our student-athletes at a higher rate than ever before," said Hill. "I'm excited about the future of Stephen F. Austin athletics and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead."
The Canadian, Texas native is in his 19th year as a member of the SFA athletic department staff, beginning as sports information director in 1987. Hill moved to assistant athletic director in 1990 and became associate athletic director in 1998.
Over the past eight years, Hill has overseen all internal operations of the department, including financial and facility matters. He has also served as the licensing director for the campus having developed the University's licensing program and its affiliation with Collegiate Licensing Company.
He has been associated with the university as a student, broadcaster or staff member for the past 37 years. Prior to joining the SFA staff, Hill spent 17 years in broadcasting which included ownership of two radio stations. He served as the play-by-play voice of Lumberjack football and basketball and also broadcast Ladyjack basketball during that time. The 2004 season was Hill's 30th year of broadcasting Lumberjack football and basketball.
