Dietz Promoted by Wheaton (Mass.)

Scott Dietz has been promoted to assistant director of athletics for media relations at Wheaton College (Mass.).  Dietz has been employed as Wheaton's sports information director since July 2000.

Working in the College's sports information office for the last six years, Dietz has built the department from the ground floor up.  He is responsible for developing and implementing an ongoing strategic plan aimed at enhancing the athletic department's publicity efforts for a highly successful program that regularly ranks among the top NCAA Division III departments in the nation.

"Having the opportunity to announce this promotion shows that excellent work, tireless effort and being a total team player truly does pay off," said Yowell.  "I would be hard-pressed to find an employee more deserving of such a promotion.  I look forward to working with Scott in his new role as part of the management team of the athletic department."

Charged with promoting and publicizing Wheaton's 21 varsity programs, Dietz has established a network of news media contacts while overseeing the day-to-day operation of the department.  His duties include creating press releases and feature stories, producing promotional materials, maintaining the athletics website, coordinating photography and compiling statistics, record books and awards lists.

Since Dietz's arrival, Wheaton's teams, coaches and student-athletes have been featured on CBS Sports, New England Cable News (NECN), Boston and Providence television news stations, as well as in Sports Illustrated, USA Today and The Boston Globe.  Dietz has also served as the host SID and primary media contact for a national championship event, seven NCAA regional tournaments and several Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championships and tournaments.

"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to represent Wheaton in my new role as an assistant athletic director," stated Dietz.  "I look forward to continuing the many relationships I have formed with the esteemed members of the media as well as with our student-athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, and faculty and staff of the college.  These are exciting times to be a part of this institution and I am eager for the challenges that lie ahead in continuing to enhance the overall student-athlete experience."

In addition to his time at Wheaton, Dietz has worked for the National Football League (NFL) and New England Patriots over the last six seasons.  Presently serving as an operator for the NFL's player participation project, he has worked on the Patriots stats crew and as a statistician and spotter for television and radio.  Dietz is also an official scorer for the Brockton Rox professional baseball team.

Currently a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and ECAC-SIDA, Dietz has been awarded a district citation for excellence in writing from CoSIDA in addition to serving as a moderator and panelist at ECAC-SIDA Workshops.  He was also a member of the local organizing committee for ECAC-SIDA's 50th-year anniversary workshop held in North Falmouth in June of 2005.

Prior to being named Wheaton's SID, Dietz was employed as an assistant in the school's sports information office and as a seasonal assistant for the Patriots.  Before relocating to New England, he served as a seasonal assistant in the media relations department with the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Cleveland Cavaliers and as a marketing assistant at the University of Pittsburgh.

A native of South Park, Penn., Dietz began his sports information career at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Penn., where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing in May of 1998.  As an undergraduate, he served four internships at Westminster, University of Pittsburgh, Youngstown State University and the New Castle News.

Wheaton also announced the hiring of Josh Kessler as assistant sports information coordinator.  Kessler, who has gained valuable experience at both the NCAA Division I and II levels in his brief tenure, will join the Division III ranks as Wheaton's first full-time sports information assistant on August 17, 2005.

Kessler comes to Wheaton after being employed as a sports publicity intern for Dartmouth College from July, 2004 to June, 2005.  Publicizing Dartmouth's 34 Ivy League varsity sports, Kessler worked extensively with the baseball, field hockey and nationally-ranked women's ice hockey teams.  He also served as the secondary contact for the men's basketball team.

Prior to joining Dartmouth's sports publicity staff, Kessler worked for four years as a volunteer student assistant in the Saint Michael's College sports information department.  Having his hand in all areas of media relations for the College's 21 varsity athletic programs, Kessler was appointed acting sports information director for two short time periods.

During his time at both Dartmouth and Saint Michael's, Kessler wrote feature stories, biographies, season previews and reviews for campus publications and media guides.  He also spent a vast amount of time researching individual and team records for publications and record books for numerous programs.

In June, 2003, Kessler received the Bill Esposito Award from the Eastern College Athletic Conference Sports Information Directors' Association, presented to a graduating college senior who wishes to pursue a career in athletic communications.  Kessler also picked up the George "Doc" Jacobs Award, given to a Saint Michael's student who makes an outstanding contribution to the athletic department in honor of the former athletic director and coach.

Kessler is a Colchester, Vermont native and 2004 graduate of Saint Michael's, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and mass communication.  He also attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a year before transferring to Saint Michael's.
