A veteran Texas sports publicist has joined the athletic staff at Midwestern State University as athletic director Kurt Portmann announced the hiring of Bill Powers as the university’s new sports information director.
Powers moves into the position after Andy Austin was promoted to associate athletic director for business and compliance. Powers comes to MSU from Texas A&M University-Commerce, where he was the sports information director for 15 of the last 18 years, including the last seven. He has also served as the SID at Stephen F. Austin State University and was the public information officer for the Waco District of the Texas Department of Transportation.
“Bill brings a wealth of experience to Midwestern,” Portmann explained. “He’s very well respected across the state as an SID and athletic administrator.”
Among his other duties, Powers is the national coordinator for the Daktronics Division II Football All-America team and is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America committee.
Powers has served in the media operations of the SBC Cotton Bowl for 18 years and has been the bowl’s official scorer for the last eight years. He’s also worked two men’s and one women’s NCAA Final Fours and has been the official scorer for the NCAA Division II Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships in addition to numerous other NCAA national and regional championship events. He has been honored with several CoSIDA awards for publication excellence.
Powers is also an award-winning broadcaster. The 1988 Jake Trussell Award winner as Lone Star Conference Broadcaster of the Year, Powers has also won several Associated Press Broadcasters Association awards in Texas and Arkansas for his work in news and sports for both radio and television.
“MSU is a great institution and I’m looking forward to promoting this outstanding program and its athletes,” Powers added. “Wichita Falls is one of the best sports towns in the state. I really feel it’s an honor to be part of a great tradition that is MSU athletics.”
A native of Las Vegas, Nev., he is a 1984 graduate of Arkansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in radio-television. He earned his master’s degree in kinesiology and sport studies from A&M-Commerce.
Married to wife Rhonda, the couple has two sons, Bill, Jr. (12) and Texas (10).
