Wright to Step Down at Millersville

Sports information directors toil anonymously from 60 to 70 hours weekly during the school year for what amounts to pennies per hour. That's especially true at the Division II and III levels.

One of the premier SIDs from this area -- Millersville's Greg Wright -- decided over the holidays that since turning 50 last year and with nearly 22 years at the school, his health could no longer handle the grind.

As a result, he took medical leave effective immediately and will leave Millersville this summer.

"You always hate to see someone like Greg leave," Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference assistant commissioner Will Adair said.

Adair once held the position of sports information director at Lock Haven University, so he knows how demanding the position can be on someone, whether they have a family or not.

"I have two children I haven't been able to spend any time with because of the demands of this job," said Wright. "And because of a concern of what the demands of this job can do to my health, I have decided to move in another direction and leave the university."

Wright was presented the Irving T. Marsh Award as Division II Eastern College Athletic Conference SID of the year in 2004.

He was one of the senior SIDs in the PSAC after John Alosi's retirement from Shippensburg a year and a half ago.

"I think the demands of the job have made this a younger man's position," Wright said. "The Internet, Web sites and everything they entail have added just that much more in the way of demands to the position."

Division I programs can generally afford the luxury of having several assistants help in the coverage of sports. Most of them have separate SIDs for their major sports from their minor ones.

Although Wright hasn't moved into another position, he admits he will take some time looking.

"I'm just trying to enjoy some time with my wife and kids while the opportunity presents itself," said Wright.
