Borghetti Named Associate AD at Pitt
E.J. Borghetti has been promoted to the position of associate athletic director for media relations, University of Pittsburgh athletic director Jeff Long announced.
"E.J. is such a valuable asset to not only the University of Pittsburgh, but the entire Pittsburgh community and we are pleased to be able to reward him in this way," Long said. "His expertise in the field of media relations, as well as Pitt athletics as a whole, makes him an invaluable part of our athletic department."
Borghetti is in his 10th year serving in Pitt's media relations office. In his position as associate athletic director for media relations, Borghetti will serve as a spokesperson and primary contact to the media for Pitt Athletics, serve as counselor, advisor and strategic collaborator to the Director of Athletics, coaches and senior administrators and will oversee the development and serve as contributing editor of Pitt Athletics print and web publications.
Borghetti currently oversees the daily publicity efforts for the Panthers' 19 intercollegiate sports. Among other administrative responsibilities, he handles the media relations efforts for Pitt's football team. In this capacity he has enjoyed the privilege of promoting three first team All-Americans, two Biletnikoff Award winners, a Walter Camp Award winner and a Heisman Trophy runner-up.
Borghetti's writing was recently recognized by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). His profile of Pitt football coach Dave Wannstedt received a "Second in the Nation" citation in CoSIDA's national writing contest.
Recently, linebacker H.B. Blades was named a first team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and Sports Illustrated.
In 2003, Borghetti handled the publicity for receiver Larry Fitzgerald, a unanimous All-American who was the first-ever sophomore to be selected the Walter Camp Player of the Year. Fitzgerald additionally won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver and was the Heisman Trophy runner-up.
Borghetti also promoted consensus All-America receiver Antonio Bryant, who was the Biletnikoff winner in 2000. Pitt is the only school to have multiple winners of the Biletnikoff Award.
In addition to his media relations duties, Borghetti helps spread the word on the Panthers in other capacities. He regularly serves as emcee for Panther Club functions and additionally contributes feature writing to the athletic department publication Panther Eyes.
Borghetti has extensive ties to the University of Pittsburgh. He is a 1992 magna cum laude graduate from the school with a bachelor's degree in communications and was as an undergraduate sports information intern. His father, Ernie, was an All-America tackle for the Panthers in 1963 and helped them to a 9-1 record and No. 3 national ranking that year.
Outside of Pitt, Borghetti serves on the American Diabetes Association Leadership Council and on the board for the HOPE Network, an organization that promotes community integration of individuals with cognitive and/or physical challenges in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
A native of New Castle, Pa., Borghetti married the former Lauren Pirilla, a 1998 Pitt graduate, this past June. The couple resides in Gibsonia.
