Union College's Stancil Honored by Soccer Coaches

Union College Sports Information Director Jay Stancil was one of five persons to be honored for excellence in soccer journalism by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

A mix of two previous honorees and three newcomers highlight the winners of the 11th Annual NSCAA Writing Contest. The NSCAA made the announcement during its annual convention, which was held in Philadelphia, Penn., on Jan. 18-22.

Steve Slivka of the Indiana Daily Student took honors for the second seconsecutive year in the Student division with his "Club Soccer Provides Local Coaching Opportunities".

Veteran soccer scribe Michael Lewis of BigAppleSoccer.com captured the Column division with his piece entitled "For Lalas, The Honeymoon's Over". For Lewis, it was his first award since 2003 and his fourth overall.

Adam Zundell's piece on M.A.C. Hermann Trophy men's winner Jason Garey entitled "Jason Garey: The Kid Can Play" at umterps.com captured College division honors. Zundell was one of three newcomers who captured contest accolades.

The other newcomers were Karyn Lush of Ponytailposse.com, who earned the Feature Story award with her "For Such A Time As This...", while Stancil was a first-time winner in the Deadline/Game Story division with "Union's Tavoloni Nets Goal No. 100".

The entries were evaluated by a panel of judges who have extensive experience in sports media and sports communications. The winner in each category will receive a plaque from NSCAA in recognition of their achievement. The contest was begun by NSCAA in 1995 to recognize the writers who best chronicle soccer's personalities, problems, games and growth each year. The published work of any accredited writer for a daily or weekly newspaper, weekly or monthly magazine or media-related Internet site is eligible for consideration.
