Phelps Promoted to SID at West Alabama

The University of West Alabamas Jason Hughes has announced his resignation as sports information director, effective March 31, 2006. Hughes leaves after six years of promoting Tiger Athletics, and will remain in Livingston to enter private business.

The McCalla, Ala., native took over as SID in October of 2000 and promoted three All-Americans (Gerald Gales, Kyle Henderson and Marcus Ross), seven All-Region winners and numerous All-Gulf South Conference selections.

My time at West Alabama has been very special, and I will always have fond memories, said Hughes. I feel that this is the best thing for my family right now, and the thing we are most excited about is remaining in Livingston. I plan to attend many UWA sporting events and look forward to continuing to support the University and its athletic programs.

UWA Athletic Director Dee Outlaw has announced that Assistant SID Steven Phelps will be promoted to SID, and an immediate search will begin for an Assistant SID. Phelps, a native of Holstein, Iowa, joined the UWA staff in September of 2005 and has since worked with all of the athletic teams at UWA.

I am honored and privileged to have been offered the SID position, said Phelps. I am looking forward to the challenges and excitement that the position brings. I have terrific coaches and athletic staff to work with and that will, no doubt, make my time here at West Alabama much more enjoyable.

Phelps is a 2001 graduate of Galva-Holstein High School, and a 2005 graduate of Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, where he received his degree in Mass Communications.
Phelps worked in the sports information office as a student assistant during his four-year tenure at BVU. He also served as the public address announcer for the campus home athletic events. He currently resides in Livingston, Ala., and is engaged to Joy Hott of Storm Lake, Iowa. The two are planning a May 2006 wedding in Storm Lake.

Jason has done an outstanding job for us in an unappreciated position, said Outlaw. He has been a loyal and tireless promoter of our programs and we want to thank him for being one of the best in the Gulf south Conference. At the same time, we are pleased to have a young, capable person in Steven Phelps. He is ready to step up and take over and we are happy to promote him. He was highly recommended when we hired him as an assistant and he has proven his mettle to us.
