CoSIDA Board Conference Call

CoSIDA Board Minutes - February 23, 2006
I. President Joe Hernandez said that the contract
with Meghan Gardner to handle the awards portion of
the Academic All-America program had been signed and
that she was working on the 2005-06 awards.
II. Treasurer Dave Wohlhueter said that he would
like to re-visit Past President Rod Commons role in
the process. He said he appreciated that Commons had
taken on the work of entering the Academic
All-America information into the data base, but
wondered how long he could continue to do it - and
if it is something that the Academic All-America
Committee should be involved in.
III. There was a question about the number of voters
on the Fall and Winter Academic All-District teams,
since it was the first voting done on-line on a
national level. Hernandez said he had talked to Mark
Beckenbach of the Academic All-America Committee who
said some districts were down, but none significantly.
IV. Hernandez said he was scheduled to visit the
NCAA national office on Friday and would be
discussing the 2006 CoSIDA Workshop, future
workshops and the NCAA's involvement and role in
those. Director of Marketing Ed Carpenter said he
had talked to Rick Nixon, who would be taking over
as the NCAA's liaison to CoSIDA. He said Nixon was
very supportive of CoSIDA and wanted to make sure
that the NCAA stayed involved. Hernandez said the
NCAA offered to credential him for the men's
basketball Final Four as CoSIDA's representative. He
said they would also credential a representative for
the women's Final Four.
V. There was discussion of an Academic All-America
speaker or emcee.
VI. Wohlhueter asked about the possibility of moving
the Spouse's Tour at the CoSIDA Workshop off Monday,
since many of the spouses work at the Workshop
registration on Monday.
VII. First Vice President Doug Dull said he had a
committee call with the Workshop Program Committee
the day before. He praised the vice chairs for their
work. He reviewed the tentative program schedule. He
said he needed to contact the CoSIDA committee
chairs to get information about committee meeting
times and space requirements for the workshop. He
said the committee discussed moving table topics to
early Monday instead of where they have
traditionally been in the afternoon.
VIII. Director of On-Line Services Maxey Parrish
asked for a tentative Workshop schedule to post on
the CoSIDA website. Dull said he would have one to
him by the end of February.
IX. Hernandez reviewed a written report on the
Workshop social schedule that had been submitted by
Second Vice President Charles Bloom. He also said
Bloom had sent solicitation letters to professional
teams, bowls and conferences and had begun receiving
some door prizes and checks.
X. Carpenter said he had received the new three-year
contract from ICS. He said ICS had iincreased the
hours of support from 120 to 160. He said CoSIDA
would reimburse ICS $90 per hour for hours beyond
that 160.  He said ICS would be a $20,000 level
CoSIDA sponsor.  There were questions about the
possibility of streaming audio on the website to be
used for CoSIDA panels, etc., in the future. Aside
from any cost factors, many felt it could be
counter-productive in getting people to attend the
workshop.
XI. Carpenter said he had discussions with the Ohio
Valley Conference about possible Workshop
involvement and sponsorship. He said he would stay
in contact with Kim Melcher at the OVC.
XII. Wohlhueter said that the Renaissance Hotel
reminded him that CoSIDA had guaranteed them
$115,000 in meals and he said that morning coffee
and pastry and any food served in the convention
center did not count toward that figure.

XIII. Wohlhueter said that in previous conversation,
Rosa Gatti of ESPN had offered to write an article
for the Digest about why people should attend the
Workshop. Secretary Jeff Hodges said he would
contact her about it.
XIV. Dull asked when the preliminary site visit for
San Diego would be. Wohlhueter said it was typically
done during the summer, following the Workshop.
Hernandez reminded the officers that the next Board
Call would be March 2, due to many conference
basketball tournaments starting the week of March 9.
The call was adjouned.
