McWethy Joins Illinois State Staff

Brett McWethy, formerly of the Mid-American Conference, was named as an assistant media relations director for the Illinois State Athletics Department.  McWethy, who replaces retiree Tom Lamonica, will begin his official duties on June 5.

"I'm really excited about the addition of Brett to our staff," said Todd Kober, assistant athletics director for media relations.  "He will bring a passion, high energy and a good level of experience to the position. Bretts outgoing personality and character will really tie in and enhance the atmosphere and attitude of our office; and I know that hes anxious to begin working with our coaches and promoting our student-athletes."

The Kalamazoo, Mich., native will serve as the primary contact for the Redbird volleyball and track and field teams, while also working closely with the ISU marketing staff and serving as the staff liaison for GoRedbirds.com, the departments official website.

McWethy just completed a one-year internship with the Mid-American Conference office in Cleveland, Ohio.  With the MAC, he served as the media contact for volleyball, wrestling, mens and womens swimming and softball, while also serving as the secondary contact for womens basketball.  In addition, he served as the media coordinator for the 2005 MAC Volleyball Tournament and the 2006 MAC Softball Tournament, which both were held at neutral sites for the first time in league history.

Prior to working at the MAC, McWethy spent six years in the athletics media relations office at his alma mater, Eastern Michigan, including the final two as a graduate assistant.  During his time with the Eagles, McWethy served as the primary media contact for womens soccer, volleyball, mens and womens swimming, track and field, womens tennis and softball.

McWethy also worked a summer as an intern in the Western Michigan athletics media relations office in 2000, after writing for the EMU school paper, the Eastern Echo.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Eastern Michigan in 2003, and earned his Masters of Science degree in sports management, also from Eastern Michigan, two weeks ago.
