WALTHAM, Mass.-- Junior ice hockey standout Sara Bauer of the University of Wisconsin and senior swimmer Tammy Leane of West Chester University head the 2005-06 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large Teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The women's at-large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, golf, gymnastics, field hockey, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, and water polo. Bauer, a native of St. Catharines, Ontario, was selected as the Academic All-America of the Year in the University Division. Honored as the winner of the Patty Kazmaier Award as the most outstanding player in womens collegiate ice hockey, Bauer led the Badgers to a 36-4-1 record and the NCAA Division I national championship in the programs seventh year of existence. A first team All-American selection, she scored 22 goals with 36 assists for a team-leading 58 points. A biology major with a 3.95 G.P.A.. she was also named as the WHCA Player of the Year as well as the WHCA Tournaments Most Valuable Player. Leane, a native of Goodwood, South Australia who won four events in the 2006 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships, was selected as the Academic All-America of the Year in the College Division. The 2006 NCAA II Swimmer of the Year earned five All-America honors and also won six Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles. Lean was one of 12 finalists for the Honda Awards as the Division II Woman Athlete of the Year. In two years at West Chester, Leane has won six NCAA titles, 12 All-American honors, and 12 PSAC titles. A psychology major with a 4.0 G.P.A., she is a two-time PSAC Athletic of the Year selection. Joining Bauer on the first team are senior skier Allison Crocker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) of Dartmouth and senior swimmer Taylor Simpson (Boiling Springs, N.C.) of Gardner-Webb, who made the first team for the second year in a row. Rounding out the group of ten seniors on the first team are fencer Emma Baratta (Somerville, N.J.) of Columbia University, rower Rachel Clausig (Lansing, Ill.) of the University of Miami, field hockey player Janelle Engle (Mt. Joy, Pa.) of Old Dominion, golfer Shanelle Howell (Koppies, South Africa), gymnast Kate Richardson (Coquitlam, B.C., Canada) of UCLA, and tennis players Alice Barnes (Cambridge, United Kingdom) of Stanford, Kristen Clary (Terre Haute, Ind.) of Xavier, Bindiya Parekh (Abu Dhabi, UAE) of Arkansas Little Rock Juniors Anca Anastasiu (tennis, Pretoria, South Africa) of Southern California, Kara Denby (swimming, Simi Valley, Cal.) of Auburn, Jessica Javelet (field hockey, Ranch Sante Fe, Cal.) of Louisville, and Brittney Koncak-Schumann (gymnastics, McQueeney, Tex.) of Oklahoma and sophomore Kristi Miller (tennis, Marysville, Mich.) of Georgia Tech round out the first team. Returning to the College Division first-team is Barry senior tennis standout Greta Trotman (Mamaroneck). Moving to the first team from the 2005 second team are Slippery Rock grad student and swimmer Jennifer Zuzack (Latrobe, Pa.), Lynn senior tennis player Dragana Ilic (Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro), Wingate senior swimmer Jessica Herman (Ashford, Conn.), and Virginia Wesleyan senior Kristen Jehl (Campton, N.H.), a field hockey and lacrosse player. Kutztown senior field hockey player Laura Kline (Reading, Pa.) makes the first team after earning 2005 third team honors. Additional seniors on the College Division first team are Jill Greshowak (swimming, Austin, Texas) of Hendrix, Ffion Fletcher (tennis, Montego Bay, Jamaica) of Shaw, Courtney Harrison (field hockey, Richmond, Va.) of Washington and Lee, Alicia Cummings (tennis, San Saba, Texas) of Tarleton State, Annie Cullen (swimming, Moorhead, Minn.) of Concordia (Minn.), and Brenna Clark (lacrosse, Wellington, Fla.) of Pfeiffer. Rounding out the first team are juniors Brittany Anderson (swimming, Dublin, Ohio) of Truman and Lauren Brown (tennis, Gaffney, S.C.) of Presbyterian. Amongst the 31 first-team honorees, an amazing 20 have grade point averages of 4.0 or better for their collegiate careers and six others are 3.90 or better. The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the programs inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
