University of Montana assistant sports information director Joel Carlson qualified for the 2006 Hawaii Ironman World Championships with his showing at the Coeur d’Alene Ironman on June 25, 2006.
Carlson finished the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run course in 9:59:59 to place 32nd out of the 2,227 triathletes competing.
Carlson finished the swim in 1:06:08, starting the bike leg in 457th place, but moved up on the field with the day’s 47th fastest bike split of 5:15:37, an average of 21.3 miles per hour.
He then posted the day’s 27th fastest marathon split of 3:32:14 to finish 32nd as the mid-afternoon temperature on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene reached into the mid 90s.
The Hawaii Ironman World Championships will be held in Kona, Hawaii, Saturday, Oct. 21.
Despite qualifying for the prestigious race, Carlson will be unable to compete due to the Grizzlies’ busy fall sports schedule.
