East Carolina Picks Amy Howard

Amy Howard has been named assistant director of athletics media relations at East Carolina University.

Howard's appointment at ECU will mark the Charlotte native's return to North Carolina after spending three years on the athletics media relations staff at Georgia Southern University.

While at GSU, she served as the primary publicist for an Eagle men's basketball program which turned in a 20-win season and advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 2005-06. In addition, she also handled sports information duties for the men's soccer and golf teams while working extensively with the department's official website.

She initially joined the Georgia Southern staff prior to the 2003-04 academic year, where in addition to acting as the lead contact for volleyball, women's cross country, track, swimming and softball, she also took over the media relations duties for the women's basketball program the following January.

Prior to her arrival at GSU, Howard served as an intern in two separate capacities at alma mater Appalachian State. As an assistant in the Mountaineer Sports Information Office, she handled primary contact duties for ASU women's soccer, women's cross country and both the men's and women's indoor and outdoor track programs. In addition, Howard also assisted with statistical management and game-day operations for football, basketball, field hockey, volleyball, softball and baseball.

Howard, 24, also worked as an assistant on the Appalachian Sports Network staff for two years, beginning in August, 2001. She wrote and produced weekly segments for live football and basketball broadcasts and conducted interviews for all ASN weekly shows. Howard also served as a studio engineer for all home and road women's basketball contests, which included the presentation of three in-studio scoreboard updates per game.

While attending Salem (N.C.) College from 1999 to 2001, Howard gained additional television experience as a production assistant at WXII-TV in Winston-Salem and WBTV-TV in Charlotte. While at WXII, she handled duties as a Beta-tape editor and photographer while assisting in the daily preparation of three nightly sports shows. Howard also aided the sports staff during "live shoots" and post-game coverage of Wake Forest basketball and Winston-Salem Warthog baseball events.

During the spring of 1999, Howard assisted the WBTV staff in its coverage of the Charlotte Hornets and in the preparation of its evening news scripts, camera and sound control.

In addition to earning two letters each as a member of the Salem field hockey and softball squads, Howard also served as the sports editor of the institution's student newspaper, The Salemite. Howard transferred to Appalachian State in 2001 and earned her bachelor's degree in communications, with a concentration in electronic media and broadcasting in May, 2003.
