Sellers Heading into Portland State HOF

In celebration of its successful sports history, the Portland State Athletics Department will induct seven new members to its Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 20. Included among the honorees on Oct. 20 will be retired Portland State Athletics Sports Information Director Larry Sellers (1968-99).

Selected to the Hall of Fame in 2004, Sellers was unable to attend the ceremony that year. He will be recognized with the 2006 class after a distinguished 31-year tenure in athletics administration.

The Portland State Athletics Hall of Fame banquet will take place on Friday, Oct. 20. A no-host social takes place at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and a reception at the NW Natural building in downtown Portland, 220 NW Second Avenue. For details and tickets, call (503) 725-4000.

In addition to the induction ceremonies at the banquet, the new Hall of Famers will be recognized at halftime of the Portland State/Eastern Washington football game on Oct. 21 at PGE Park.

Following the induction, the PSU Athletics Hall of Fame will grow to 48 athletes, six teams, 13 coaches and three meritorious honorees. The Portland State Athletics program enters its 60th year, beginning with the formation of Vanport Extension Center in 1947.

Larry Sellers, Sports Information Director/Meritorious Service, 1968-99
Larry Sellers dedicated 31 years of his life to the service of the Portland State Athletics program. Sellers served in the capacity of Sports Information Director, publicizing Viking teams, working as a key administrator within the athletics department and spending many years as a radio broadcaster. Sellers served as the media contact throughout many changes in level of play, conference and national affiliations, and programs offered. He witnessed, as well as promoted, many PSU stars of the past, including June Jones, Freeman Williams, Neil Lomax, and Dan Russell, as well as national champions in volleyball and wrestling, a nationally-prominent football program, and nationally-ranked teams in virtually every sport at some point during his tenure. Sellers warmth and goodwill on the job assisted in giving PSU a positive image in the local community and through the media.
