Tiernan Named Golf Coach and Assistant SID at Greensboro
Scott Tiernan has been named head golf coach and assumes the newly created assistant sports information director position at Greensboro College, announced Pride Athletics Director Kim Strable.
Tiernan replaces longtime Greensboro College Golf Coach Robert Linville who decided to retire as head coach, but will remain as associate head coach.
A native of Greensboro, Tiernan played collegiate golf at NCAA Division I College of William and Mary. He was a team captain for The Tribe and he graduated from W&M in 1996. He has seven years of teaching experience (language arts and physical education) and earned a Master's degree in
Education from Stanford University in 2002.
Since moving back to Greensboro in 2006 with his wife, Dorothy, Tiernan has operated his own tennis management company and has worked as a freelance reporter for the Greensboro News and Record. The couple is expecting their first child any day.
This really is an exciting opportunity for Scott, Strable said. We hired our first full-time SID in 1997.
Since then, partly due to changing technology, the demands and importance of athletics communications have increased. We feel extremely fortunate in finding a perfect fit for combining the golf position with assisting in sports information. It is such an asset when coaches can be fulltime with the College, especially when they have skill sets that meet other departmental needs. We look forward to Scott working with Sports Information Director Bob Lowe in publicizing Pride athletics."
Linville recently finished his 13th season heading the Greensboro College Golf Program in 2006-07. His teams placed in the top seven at the NCAA national tournament in 10 of his 13 seasons coaching The Pride. Linvilles crowning achievement was leading the 2000 Pride team to GCs first ever national championship in any sport. In that same season, Linville earned South Region Coach-of-the-Year and National Coach-of-the-Year honors among NCAA Division III coaches as selected by the Golf
Coaches Association of America.
