EMU's Jim Streeter honored by Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association
Veteran Eastern Michigan University sports information director Jim Streeter is the recipient of the 2007 "Best of the Best Award" by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association (DSBA). The award was presented at the 21st Annual DSBA Charity Golf Scramble, Monday, July 9, 2007, at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township, Mich.
The Kathy Best "Best of the Best Award" is given annually for excellence in sports media/public relations in the state of Michigan. It is named after Best, a former public relations specialist with the Detroit Red Wings hockey team.
The 2007-08 year will be Streeter's 34th in the sports information office at EMU and his 33rd as the sports information director.
The 59-year-old Streeter (2-10-48) earned a bachelor's degree from EMU in December 1973, with a major in physical education and minors in journalism and history. He was sports editor of the student newspaper, The Eastern Echo, for two years.
After serving a two-year stint as a sportswriter for The Ypsilanti Press, Streeter joined EMU as an assistant sports information director in 1974. He was named SID in August 1975.
Streeter is a member of the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and was a member of the publications committee for four years. He was the secretary of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters and Writers Association (DSBWA) from 1990-94 after serving as vice president for one year.
Streeter was selected as one of nine Media Marshals for the 2004 Ryder Cup Golf competition at Oakland Hills Country Club. He was also inducted into the EMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
A native of Albion, Mich., Streeter graduated from Albion High School in 1966. He earned two varsity letters in baseball and two in basketball at Albion High. He served as president of the Varsity Club his senior year and vice-president of the junior and senior classes.
Streeter and his wife, Mary, live in Ypsilanti and have three sons: Andrew (4-8-77), twins Michael and David (4-4-79), two granddaughters, Isabel (1-3-99) and Annaliese (7-28-03), and one grandson, Avery (2-3-06).
