Renfro Joins Union (Ky.) Sports Info Staff

Union College Director of Athletics Darin Wilson recently announced that Gene Renfro has joined the staff as the new Assistant Sports Information Director.

“We are pleased to have Gene join our staff, and I am confident that he will do nothing but strengthen our sports information office,” Wilson said. “In my opinion, Union has had one of the best sports information offices around for a number of years, and I expect that will not change with Gene coming on board.”

Renfro, a native of Johnson City, Tenn., joins Union Sports Information Director Jay Stancil’s staff, which has garnered 29 NAIA-SIDA Publication Contest award over the past four years.

“I am excited about having Gene come to Union,” Stancil said. “I have known him for a number of years and have developed a good working relationship with him and look forward to joining forces with him.”

For the past six years, Renfro has worked in the Milligan (Tenn.) College sports information office, serving four years as a student assistant and the past two as a graduate assistant. In 2005, he graduated from Milligan with a degree in communications. Renfro received his master’s in sports management from East Tennessee State University in May of 2007.

“From my time at Milligan, I have developed great friendships with the administration and coaching staff at Union, and now Darin and Jay have given me the opportunity to work side-by-side with them,” Renfro said. “While at Milligan, Jay was someone I could work with and bounce ideas off of. Now instead of communicating via phone or email, we’ll be working in the same department.”

In addition to his tenure at Milligan, Renfro has spent time work for the Elizabethton Twins, a minor-league baseball organization, as well as the collegiate summer league baseball teams the Tennessee Thunder and Tennessee Redbirds.
