The University of West Alabama Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Tony Schmidt as Assistant Sports Information Director at UWA, effective August 13th.

Schmidt, the fifth recipient of the Bob Hartley Memorial Fellowship Scholarship, will complete his Master’s Degree in Sports Administration in December 2007 from Mississippi State University. As a graduate assistant in the MSU Athletic Media Relations office, he has served as the publicist for the MSU track & field/cross country programs and men's golf team. He also acted as the sports information contact for the women's tennis squad in 2006.

"I am extremely excited to be a part of the West Alabama family and I look forward to working with all of the coaches and student-athletes on campus," Schmidt said. “I know this will be a great experience for me. I would like to thank UWA President Dr. Richard Holland, Director of Athletics E.J. Brophy and others for this opportunity.”

A native of Starkville, Miss., Schmidt earned his bachelor's degree in the summer of 2005 from MSU in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in public relations and sports communication. While completing his undergraduate degree he served as a student assistant for the Athletic Media Relations office, where he first served as the men’s golf contact for two years.

Schmidt has also gained experience working with the Southeastern Conference during various events throughout his college life and also volunteering his services at the 2003 NCAA Division I Baseball Regional, the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship and the 2006 Nokia Sugar Bowl.
