TEMPLE’S AL SHRIER INDUCTED INTO UNIVERSITY’S SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATIONS AND THEATER HALL OF FAME
PHILADELPHIA – Longtime Temple sports information director Al Shrier was one of seven inductees into the University’s School of Communications and Theater Hall of Fame Wednesday at a luncheon held on campus in the Great Room of Mitten Hall.
The veteran athletic administrator was joined by Robin Mackintosh ’71 (CBS 3 reporter, retired), Diane Heery ’76 (Casting Director, Heery Casting LLC), Ed Cunningham ’69 (Producer, WHYY), Yair Stern ‘700 (Former Director General, Israel Television), Suzanne Smith ’80 (Producer/Director, CSB Sports) and Doug Gaston ’83 (Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Comcast Cable). Maria Bartiromo, the anchor of CNBC’s Closing Bell with Maria Bartiromo, was honored with the Lew Klein Excellence in the Media Award.
The longest active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) at 55 years and counting, Shrier has served at Temple since 1953. His service to the media is second only to his dedication to the student- athlete. Besides his induction into the SCAT Hall of Fame, he is a member of the CoSIDA Hall of Fame, the Temple University Hall of Fame, the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame, and the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
He was honored this past March with the Bob Vetrone Atlantic 10 Media Award. The award recognizes those whose service, professionalism and commitment have made a lasting contribution to its student-athletes and institutions. The Atlantic 10 instituted the award in 2006 to honor the memory of the late Bob Vetrone. Vetrone's involvement in basketball covered the spectrum, first as a sportswriter, then with the Big Five, and then as sports information director at La Salle.
Shrier was also honored with a Bobblehead Doll in 2004, in a rare tribute to an athletic administrator. The Shrier Bobblehead Doll was given out at a men’s basketball game to fans 50-and-older.
