Hanberry named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Commissioner
SUWANEE, Ga. – Dwayne Hanberry was named the commissioner of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in an announcement made Wednesday at the league’s annual Board of Directors meeting in Atlanta.
In making the announcement for the Council of Presidents of the SCAC, Oscar C. Page, President of Austin College in Sherman, Texas, expressed appreciation to Mr. Hanberry for his excellent work as Interim Commissioner. “Hanberry’s knowledge of the conference and his vision for the future of the conference were key factors in his selection,” said Page. “He will represent this conference in a positive manner and will help us maintain the level of quality and integrity that has been reflected in the administrative work of the conference and in the sports programs on each member campus.”
Hanberry begins his duties immediately as the SCAC’s second commissioner, succeeding Steve Argo, who stepped down in January. Hanberry, who has been with the SCAC since 1995 and most recently served as the league’s associate commissioner, had been the league’s interim commissioner since Argo’s resignation.
In accepting the offer to become the Commissioner of the SCAC Hanberry said, "I am excited and honored to lead the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference – widely considered one of the elite Division III conferences in the nation. I am also grateful to the Presidents of the SCAC for giving me this opportunity. Having been with the SCAC office since 1995, I have developed a special relationship with many of the athletics directors and coaches in our conference and I know how hard they work to make this league great. As commissioner, I want to do everything I can to continue this good work and to continue to move this conference forward as a leader in Division III athletics.”
Hanberry is a 1988 graduate of Oglethorpe University. He and his wife, Charis, have two sons David, 13, and Daniel, 9, and reside in Suwanee, Ga., a suburb north of Atlanta.
The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference is composed of 12 of the most prestigious liberal art colleges and universities in the nation. The member institutions are located in nine different states – making the SCAC one of the more geographically diverse athletic associations in the nation.
