UNO's Anderson Announces Retirement Effective August 31
UNO sports information director to retire University of Nebraska at Omaha sports information director Gary Anderson announced today that he will retire Aug. 31.
Anderson has served as the school's sports information director since Oct. 1979. He also served as the interim athletic director in 1988-89 and briefly in 1994 and 1995. During his tenure, the sports information office has won numerous publication awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
He was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2005 and in 2006 was named an Omaha North High School Viking of Distinction. Anderson also wrote and published a book, "Those Were the Knights: The History of Professional Hockey in Omaha," in 2001.
He is co-founder and president of the Omaha Hockey Hall of Fame and is a co-founder of the Elkhorn Historical Society. Anderson and his wife, Wendy, live in Elkhorn. They have four grown children and three grandchildren.
"I am grateful to so many people, for their help and support over the years," Anderson said. "I have worked for some remarkable people, and have benefited from the friendship and talents of many, many volunteers as well as my friend and associate, Steve Field.
"Most of all, though, my family's love and support have made it possible for me to make a career in this profession. UNO has been a part of my life since 1964 and it will continue to be in my heart."
UNO athletic director David Miller said that a search for a new SID will begin immediately.
