Seavey Appointed As Director Of Sports Information & Compliance At Massachusetts Maritime; Former Suffolk SID Also Named As MASCAC Director Of Media Relations

Buzzards Bay, Mass.-- Jim Seavey, who served for the past year in a part-time role as Sports Information Director at Suffolk University in Boston, has been named as the Director of Sports Information and Compliance at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, effective immediately. Seavey’s appointment was confirmed by Bob Corradi, Massachusetts Maritime’s Director of Athletics, as he replaces Skip Thompson, who is retiring after 35 years of service to the Academy.
Seavey has also been appointed as the Director of Media Relations for the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC), of which Massachusetts Maritime is a member. His appointment to that position, which was announced by MASCAC Commissioner Angela Baumann, is effective August 4th.

A 1986 graduate of Marquette University, Seavey brings two decades of experience in college sports information to his new positions, as he most recently oversaw all athletic public relations efforts for Suffolk’s 13-sport NCAA Division III program. He spent 17 years working at three NCAA Division II affiliated schools, including a nine-year stint (1998-2007) as the Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs and Communications at Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.) as well as a combined eight years as both the Sports Information Director and Director of Athletic Media Relations at Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.) and the University of Massachusetts Lowell from 1990 through 1998. He worked during the past year in dual roles at Suffolk as well as the health insurance industry.

Seavey served one-year stints as the SID at both Loras College (Dubuque, Iowa) and Nichols College (Dudley, Mass.) in the late 1980’s in addition to his year of service at Suffolk. In addition, he served as Publicist for the New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) during the 2006-07 academic year and also has experience as the Media Relations Director for the Pilgrim Lacrosse League and the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association. Seavey also served as the Interim Director of Media Relations for Hockey East in 1994.

“I am very pleased to welcome Jim to the Academy,” Corradi says of Seavey’s appointment. “His 20 years of experience in many areas will benefit our student-athletes and our programs as a whole, and I look forward to working with him for many years to come.”

Seavey is currently serving a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as a College Division Representative, and he served as President of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Sports Information Directors Association (ECAC-SIDA) during its 50th anniversary year of 2004-05. He has served on four NCAA Division II Championship regional advisory committees, including a stint as chair of the Men’s Basketball Northeast Regional Advisory Committee from 2000-2002.

“We are extremely excited to have Jim aboard as the MASCAC’s Media Relations Director,” Baumann says of Seavey. “Jim has proven himself in the profession for more than two decades, and we believe he will continue to help the MASCAC move forward in its continuing marketing efforts.”

Seavey is entering his 18th year as a member of CoSIDA’s prestigious Academic All-America Committee, as he was recently named as the program’s Vice Chair for Marketing after serving for the past 13 years as a national coordinator. Additionally, he has successfully promoted 17 student-athletes for national Academic All-America honors during his career and received a Citation for Excellence in Publications from CoSIDA in 1991 for his work on Merrimack’s women’s basketball game program. A former chair of the Northeast-10 Conference Sports Information Directors Council for three years, Seavey has had 10 student-athletes featured in Sports Illustrated’s prestigious “Faces In The Crowd” column since 1992, including four Stonehill student-athletes in a nine month span in 2006.

Jim and his wife, Cheryl, (a former basketball standout at Stonehill), reside in Bridgewater, Mass. with daughters Mikayla (10) and Lindsey (7).
