Schwepker Fills SID Role for MCU
Steve Schwepker has been hired by Mid-Continent University in Mayfield, Kentucky, to fill the position of Sports Information Director. Schwepker returns to the college SID profession after eight years (2000-2008) as a fifth and sixth grade teacher and boys’ basketball coach at Grace Christian Academy in Yuba City, California, but is no stranger to his craft as he begins his 20th year as a college SID.
Prior to his time in California, Schwepker served as SID at Southwest Baptist University, an NCAA Division II school in Bolivar, Missouri, in 1999-2000, after handling the SID chores from 1991-99 at Wheaton College, an NCAA Division III college in Illinois, where he won 16 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) sports media publications awards and served as vice-chair of CoSIDA’s Membership Services Committee. He was responsible for meeting the media relations needs of 21 intercollegiate sports programs at Wheaton, including nationally competitive teams in football, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, track and field, and swimming, and publicized numerous All-Americans and national award winners. Prior to Wheaton, Schwepker worked as SID from 1989-91 at Saddleback College, a southern California junior college.
Schwepker begin his sports information career as Assistant Sports Information Director at Biola University in La Mirada, California, from 1971-73, and was promoted and worked as SID from 1973-75. He also served as Biola’s newspaper sports editor and after graduation in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, returned as Biola’s first full-time SID from 1980-84. Between 1980 and 1984, Schwepker was the SID for a fast-growing Biola athletics program which experienced such successes as a 39-1 number one ranked men’s basketball team, a first-round baseball draft choice, Todd Worrell, who went on to pitching fame with the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Dodgers, and national championship competition by teams or individuals in eight sports. Schwepker totaled 4 first-place awards from Amateur Wrestling News and 2 NAIA-SIDA publication awards at Biola.
After leaving Biola in 1984, Schwepker served as Assistant Venue Press Chief at the wrestling competition of the Los Angeles Olympic Games with responsibility for the successful operation of the Media Center at the Anaheim Convention Center. His efforts won Schwepker a top 10 per cent ranking among all Olympic volunteers. He taught sixth grade and coached football, basketball, and baseball at San Gabriel Christian School from 1985-89, before returning to the sports information profession at Saddleback College.
A native of Belleville, Illinois, Schwepker was reared in Yorba Linda, California, graduated from Troy High School in Fullerton in 1971, and from Biola University. He is the son of Paul and Marilyn Schwepker, who now reside in Lebanon, Missouri.
