Fremund Named Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations at South Alabama Jaguar Media Relations Office Also Adds Three New Interns

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama Director of Athletics Joe Gottfried announced Friday that Brian Fremund has been named the new Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations.

“We are excited with the hiring of Brian Fremund to head our media relations department,” Gofffried said. “Brian comes to us with an experienced background. Having been in the Sun Belt conference at WKU, he is very familiar with our situation.”

Fremund is familiar with the Sun Belt Conference and South Alabama as he has spent the previous nine years at fellow league member Western Kentucky. Fremund began his time with the Hilltoppers in September of 1999 as the Assistant Sports Information Director and primary contact for both the Football and Softball programs. In September of 2002, the Montvale, N.J. native was promoted to the Director of Athletic Media Relations at WKU.

"I couldn't be more excited about the opportunity to join the staff at South Alabama,” Fremund said. “Not only has the athletic department experienced a great amount of success both in and out of competition over the years, but in talking to administrators and coaches, you can sense the anticipation that the impact of adding football is going to have in the Mobile community. I'm looking forward to doing everything I can to help promote the school's 17 programs as USA looks to continue its athletic excellence in the future.”

"I'd also like to thank the many great individuals I have worked with at WKU over the last nine years. Without their support, I wouldn't be in the position I'm in today."

While at WKU, Fremund oversaw a department that was responsible for the promotion of 20 sports programs. In addition to serving as the main contact for the Hilltopper men’s basketball team that reached the postseason on four occasions (NCAA – Twice and NIT – Twice), including last season’s run to the Sweet 16, Fremund was also responsible for directing the school’s efforts in transitioning from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (I-AA) to the Football Subdivision (I-A) level.  As the primary contact for the Hilltopper football program, Fremund worked with the 2002 I-AA national champions and promoted a team that advanced to the I-AA playoffs five straight years.

During his time at Western Kentucky, the media relations office has been considered by many as one of the better athletic media relations offices in the Sun Belt Conference.

Prior to going to WKU, Fremund also served as Assistant Sports Information Director at both the University of New Orleans (1997-99) and Jacksonville University (1995-97). He began his career in the sports information field as a student assistant at the University of Richmond.

During his senior year at Richmond, Fremund served as an intern at the Colonial Athletic Association. Upon his graduation he served an internship in the Jacksonville Sports Information office. He also gained writing experience at The Florida Times-Union.

Fremund is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), serving on the Scholarship Committee since 1997. He is also a member of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), as well as the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science, with a minor in Sports Management from University of Richmond.

The Jaguar media relations office also announced Friday the addition of three new interns; David Kaye (Baylor University), Corinne Calabro (Kansas State) and Cristena Snarski (North Carolina) for the upcoming year.
