Canal, McCoy Join Sports Information Staff

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College Sports Information Director Josh Manck is pleased to announced the addition of Eugene Canal and Patrick McCoy to the College's sports information staff for the 2008-09 academic year. Canal and McCoy will join Brice Zimmerman as Sports Information Assistants.

Eugene Canal begins his first year with the Newberry College athletic department as a sports information assistant. He serves as the primary media contact for volleyball, women’s basketball and both tennis teams.

His duties include management for home games, keeping of statistical records and production of media guides for all of his assigned varsity sports. He will also assist with the game management of all other varsity sports.

He attended St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Fla., where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree as a double major in Communication Arts and Religious Studies.

While at St. Thomas University, he served as a Sports Information Assistant and was a freelancer writer for the Miami Edition of the Florida Catholic. Eugene was born in Port Jefferson, N.Y., and mostly recently resided in Parrish, Fla.

"Eugene's experience at St. Thomas University will be very helpful to our department and our student-athletes," Manck said. "His knowledge of small college athletics combined with his desire to excel at Newberry College and in his future can only be beneficial to our students and staff."

Patrick McCoy begins his first year with Newberry College as a Sports Information Assistant. He serves as the primary contact for Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Wrestling and Softball. He will be responsible for the publicity, game management, and statistical record keeping for those four sports.

His duties include distribution of information on his assigned sports to all media contacts, collection and publication of game results on the athletic website, supervision of student workers, and maintenance of team statistics, photos, team records, and individual accomplishments.

Prior to working for Newberry College, McCoy worked as the Student Assistant for Sports Information at the University of Kentucky. While at UK, he volunteered as a Media Assistant at the Southeastern Conference Men’s Baseball and Basketball tournaments. He also worked as Media Assistant at the NCAA tournament’s first and second rounds.

He received his B.S. from the University of Kentucky where he majored in Integrated Strategic Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations and also minored in Business. While at Kentucky, McCoy served as the student representative for College Sports Television Network. McCoy was born in Noblesville, Ind., most recently resided in Roopville, Ga. He now resides in Newberry.

"Patrick has a unique experience with his hands-on assistance and learning at Kentucky as well as the SEC and NCAA Tournaments," Manck said. "His experience at a larger school will bring new insight to services we can offer our student-athletes and will continue his development as a professional."

"I am very pleased with the enthusiasm and skill Eugene and Patrick have already shown in their first few days on the job. Their talent and hard work combined with the groundwork laid by Brice, myself and all previous SID's and interns will help our department continue to be a great success," Manck added.
