Saint Leo, Fla. – Evan Ortiz has been named Sports Information Director at Saint Leo University; it was announced by Director of Athletics Francis X. Reidy. Ortiz reports to Saint Leo on August 11, 2008.
Ortiz replaces Eddie Kenny, who resigned his position as assistant athletic director of external operations/SID, June 30, to become director of athletics at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School.
Ortiz previously was sports information director for fellow Sunshine State Conference school Eckerd College the past two and a half years. Before joining Eckerd, Ortiz was assistant sports information director at Saint Leo under the tutelage of Marketing Director and former Sports Information Director Walt Riddle.
"We are excited to have one of our own re-join the staff,” said Reidy. “Evan's talents and enthusiasm for his job is a perfect match for our department.
"Evan will allow us to continue our on-line broadcasts and hopefully take us into streaming video and other areas, as we expand our information output."
A native of Tampa, Fla., Ortiz received his B.A. in Business Management and Administration in 2004 from Saint Leo University where he was also a member of the baseball team. Prior to his years at Saint Leo, Ortiz spent two years at Florida College in Temple Terrace, Fla., where he earned his AA degree and played for the baseball team.
“I am looking forward to returning to a place that has always held a special place in my heart,” said Ortiz. “I am grateful to Mr. Reidy for giving me this opportunity and, I am looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and making new ones as we improve the experience of the student-athletes at Saint Leo. I have some very big shoes to fill with what Eddie Kenny and, before him, Walt Riddle, have established at Saint Leo. They set a high standard I hope to meet in my time as a Lion. I also want to thank everyone at Eckerd College for a wonderful two and a half years.”
