CARY, NC--
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announces a joint partnership with collegiate administrative colleagues and The V Foundation for Cancer Research in support of a both a worthy cause and of the annual celebration of National College Football Day. The sixth annual National College Football Day takes place on Saturday, November 7, 2009.

National College Football Day annually commemorates the first-ever college football game which was played on November 6,1869 between Rutgers and Princeton.

Originated by the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic six years ago, National College Football Day took on charitable partner The V Foundation for Cancer Research in 2006 to help gain awareness and funding for cancer research. CoSIDA joins the AT&T Cotton Bowl, American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), the National Association of Collegiate Football Officials (NACFO), the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA) to commemorate the annual birthday of college football while supporting the fight against cancer.

“CoSIDA is honored to be in partnership with The V Foundation and these fine football associations to support the efforts of cancer research in conjuction with National College Football Day,” noted Justin Doherty, CoSIDA President. “We all know someone who has been affected by cancer and through our efforts in promoting and celebrating National College Football Day, we will serve two purposes - raising awareness about the game’s history while raising awareness and support for The V Foundation by reaching hundreds of thousands of student-athletes, coaches, campus and community personnel, and family and friends who follow collegiate football.

"This National College Football Day initiative helps raise necessary funds and awareness for the important work of The V Foundation, where 100 percent of all its donations and net event proceeds go directly to cancer research,” Doherty concluded.

“We are thrilled that CoSIDA has joined our National College Football Day family,” said Rick Baker, President of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Bowl Classic. “Sports media relations directors play a major role in the college football game-day experience, and their responsibility as chief communicators in athletic departments and conferences will help further the annual celebration, as well as spread the message for the need for funding for essential cancer research.”

Type of Donations on National College Football Day

Traditionally, individual members of the American Football Coaches Association have donated $1 for every year of football for cancer research. The 2009 season marks the 140th year.

Many game officials donate a portion of their game stipends and the football writers have traditionally made a join contribution. In addition, conference and university officials, along with friends and sponsors of the AT&T Cotton Bowl, have responded generously to a mailing that provides an annual collectible cloisonné [enamel metal work] pin to be worn to commemorate the day.

“The V Foundation is humbled to be embraced by the collegiate football community,” said Foundation CEO Nick Valvano. “The CoSIDA members honor us with their support and we look forward to a great 2009 National College Football Day campaign.”

The V Foundation was chosen as the National College Football Day charitable partner because cancer is one disease that will eventually affect every American family in some way. In our lifetime, cancer will strike one of every two American men and one of every three women.

The V Foundation, recently awarded a coveted seventh-consecutive four-star (highest possible) rating by Charity Navigator (America’s premier charity evaluator) awards 100 percent of all donations and net event proceeds directly to cancer research. The V Foundation funds research nationwide, for all types of cancers.
