First set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division II & Division III standings released

The first 2009-10 Division I releases/standings will appear on Dec. 3.

Cleveland, Ohio –
Adams State (Colo.) leads the first set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall Division II standings, while Washington University (Mo.) is the leader among DIvision III schools after the first fall Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings.

The Adams State Grizzlies have accumulated 200 total points after taking home both the men’s and women’s NCAA cross country titles. Defending Directors’ Cup champion Grand Valley State (Mich.) trails the Grizzlies by 65 points after finishing second in the women’s cross country championship and fifth in the men’s cross country championship. The Lakers have 165 total points.

In NCAA Division III competition, the Washington University Bears lead Williams (Mass.) by nine points, 229-220. Washington finished first in women’s volleyball, seventh in men’s cross country and 10th in the women’s cross country championship.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.

The next Division II and Division III standings will be released Thursday, December 10.

In Division III, the Ephs of Williams (Mass.) tallied three top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish in the men’s cross country championship. Williams also finished eighth in women’s cross country and ninth in women’s volleyball. Wisconsin Eau Claire has 192 points after capturing the women’s cross country title, recording a 16th place showing in men’s cross country and 17th place finish in the volleyball championship.

Rounding out the top-five is Calvin (Mich.) and Salisbury (Md.). The Knights of Calvin finished third in women’s cross country, 13th in men’s cross country and 17th in women’s volleyball, bringing their point total to 186.

In Division II, Massachusetts Lowell is in third (160 total points) behind Adams State and Grand Valley State, after finishing second in women’s field hockey, 16th in men’s cross country and 23rd in women’s cross country.

Western State (Colo.) is fourth overall with 153 points. The Mountaineers finished as the national runner-up in men’s cross country and took home ninth place in women’s cross country. Rounding out the top-five is Shippensburg (Pa.) with 151 points. The Raiders finished third in women’s field hockey, 13th in men’s cross country and 15th in the women’s cross country championship.

Three of the seven fall NCAA DII championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: Adams State (men’s and women’s cross country); and Bloomsburg (Pa.) (women’s field hockey).
