TOWSON, Md.
– Senior forward Brett Winkelman of North Dakota State University and senior guard Jimmy Bartolotta of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) headline the 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Men’s Basketball teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Winkelman and Bartolotta have been named as the Academic All-America® of the Year in the University and College Divisions, respectively.

An Industrial Engineering and Management major with a 3.88 Grade Point Average, Winkelman has been named to the Academic All-America team for the third straight season. He is the only repeat selection on the first team after earning second team notice as a sophomore. A three-year starter at forward, he is the second-leading scorer for the Bison with an 18.2 average. Winkelman has led the Bison to a 20-6 record while averaging 7.1 rebounds per game with a .510 field goal percentage.

A native of Morris, Minn., Winkelman was the Summit League Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2008. He has also earned Commissioner’s List of Excellence and All-Academic Team accolades for his academic achievement.  He is a member of the NDSU and Summit League SAAC groups and is currently serving as the Vice President of the NDSU group.

A native of Littleton, Col., Bartolotta majors in Management Science and Physics and has a 3.63 G.P.A. at MIT.  A finalist for the 2008 Jostens Trophy, he is MIT’s career scoring leader with 2,154 points. A two-time All-NEWMAC first team selection, he led the conference in scoring as a junior with a 23.9 scoring average. Bartolotta, who broke the MIT single game scoring record with 43 points earlier this season, is the third-leading scorer in NCAA Division III with a 28.1 average this season. He has scored 30 or more points in 11 games this year while leading MIT to a 17-8 record.

A first team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America® selection in 2008, Bartolotta was honored as a 2008 NABC Northeast All-District second team pick along with earning honorable mention All-America notice from D3Hoops.

The three-time NEWMAC Academic All-Conference selection volunteers his time at the Cambridge Community Charter School mentoring middle school children.  Last summer, he was a senior intern at Lockheed Martin.

On the Academic All-America® University Division first team, Winkelman is joined by senior guards Bryan Mullins of Southern Illinois, Alex Rouff of West Virginia, Jason Holsinger of Evansville and junior guard Aaron Linn of Gardner-Webb.

A Finance major with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A., Mullins was an Academic All-America® second team selection as a junior. A starter in 22 games for the Salukis, he leads the team with 124 assists and 45 steals. He is also averaging 9.3 points per game, third on the team. An excellent long-range shooter, he has made 43 per cent of his three-point attempts.  Only the second player in Missouri Valley Conference history to record 500 assists and 250 steals in his career, he has been honored as the MVC Scholar Athlete of the Week twice. The MVC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2008, the Downer’s Grove, Ill. native was named to the pre-season 2008-09 All-MVC team.

Rouff is a History major with a 3.79 G.P.A. A native of Spring Hill, Fla., he is a three-year starter at guard who became the 42nd player in WVU history to score 1,000 career points. A third team Academic All-America® choice as a junior, he is the Mountaineers’ second-leading scorer with a 16.1 average. An outstanding three-point shooter, he has 245 career three-pointers, a mark that is just shy of the school record. Rouff, who also leads WVU with 3.6 assists per game and a .793 free throw percentage, is the only senior on the Mountaineers team and has led them to a 19-8 record. He was selected as the recipient of the 2008 BIG EAST Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award and spent time this past summer visiting a camp for kids with cancer.

A native of Lapel, Ind., Holsinger is an Economics Studies major with a 3.89 G.P.A.  A four-year starter at guard, he is a two-year team captain who has led Evansville to a 16-11 record this season. The Aces’ second-leading scorer, he is averaging 12.7 points per game and leads Evansville with 3.7 assists per contest. Honored as the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete for the last two years, he has scored nearly 1,400 points in his college career. Holsinger also leads the Aces with 57 three-point baskets made and an .811 free throw percentage. He is one of 30 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and a nominee for the Chip Hilton Award. 

The lone junior selected to the Academic All-America ® first team, Linn is a Finance major with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A.  The second-leading scorer for Gardner-Webb, he is averaging 15.0 points per game with a .448 field goal percentage. A native of Lexena, Kan., he leads the Runnin’ Bulldogs with 47 steals and ranks second on the team with 2.9 assists per game. A preseason All-Big South Conference selection by The Sporting News/Street & Smith’s, he was named as the Most Valuable Player at the 2007 2K Sports Classic Lexington Regional where GWU upset 20th-ranked Kentucky.

Senior Mike Schachtner of Wisconsin-Green Bay leads the Academic All-America® University Division second team. A Psychology major with a 3..81 G.P.A., he was also a second team selection last year and earned third team notice as a sophomore. Seniors Jimmy Baron of Rhode Island and Ryan Schneider of Marist join junior Yves Mekongo Mbala of LaSalle and sophomore Matt Howard of Butler to complete the second team. 

Graduate student Kevin Lisch of Saint Louis University, whose younger sister, Theresa Lisch, was named as a first team Academic All-America® women’s basketball player on Monday, leads the Academic All-America® third team. Seniors Greg Paulus of nationally-ranked Duke and senior Andy Wicke of Belmont join juniors Patrick Foley of Columbia and David Kool of Western Michigan to complete the third team.

While Bartolotta is the only repeat selection on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ® College Division first team, senior Ben Falkenberg of Mt. Vernon Nazarene and graduate student Kent Raymond of Wheaton (Ill.) College were honored as second team selections last year. Senior Jesse Wagstaff of Metropolitan State earned third team notice last year while senior guard Scott Morton of SUNY Geneseo rounds out the Academic All-America® College Division first team.

A two-time NAIA Division II All-American selection, Falkenberg will finish his career as Mt. Vernon Nazarene’s all-time scoring leader with more than 2,500 points. A four-year starter in the backcourt for the Cougars, he is averaging 18.6 points per game as a senior while leading the Cougars to a 23-7 record and a number 12 national ranking. A Biology major with a 3.83 G.P.A., Falkenberg also leads the team with 4.1 assists per game. With a .908 percentage, he is the NAIA leader in free throw shooting. A native of Wadsworth, Ohio, he was named as the American Mideast Conference Player of the Year twice.

Named as an NABC Division III All-American selection twice, Raymond is a graduate student with a 3..70 G.P.A. and a major in Intercultural Studies. A native of Cumberland, Ind., he is averaging 23.8 points per game with a .512 field goal percentage and an .895 free throw mark. Named as the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Most Outstanding Player as a junior, he has been named as the CCIW Player of the Week five times this year. Recently, he scored the 2,000th point of his career and is ranked second on the Thunder’s career scoring list. Raymond has led Wheaton to a 22-3 record, a number seven national ranking and the CCIW regular season title.

A three-year starter at forward, Wagstaff is a Civil Engineering Technology major with a perfect 4..0 G.P.A.  Named as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week three times, he is the leading scorer (17.2 ppg) and rebounder (7.4 rpg) for the Roadrunners. A member of the All-RMAC pre-season team, he has led Metro State to a 22-3 record and a number 18 national ranking as well as the RMAC Northern Division regular season title. The Canberra, Australia native was a first team All-RMAC selection in 2008.

A four-year starter at forward at SUNY Geneseo, Morton is a Business Administration major with a 3..90 G.P.A.  A two-time All-SUNYAC selection, he leads the Blue Knights in scoring (20.8 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg) and assists (4.5 apg). As a senior, he has led the Blue Knights to a 17-8 record and the number one seed for the SUNYAC Tournament. Honored as the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman, Morton has received the conference’s Chancellor’s Award in men’s basketball twice, given to the athlete with the highest G.P.A. on both the All-Conference team.  Named to the SUNYAC All-Academic Team three times and the Commissioner’s List twice, he is also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Seniors Kyle Goldcamp of Gannon, Kyle Holliday of Ohio Wesleyan, Brian Small of Suffolk and Matt Sosna of Widener lead the Academic All-America® College Division second team. Junior Bryce Pendleton of Southern Virginia, a Politics major with a 4.00 G.P.A., rounds out the second team.

Graduate student Chris Bach of East Stroudsburg earned third team honors, along with senior Mark Carson of RIT and senior Mark Gillingham of Illinois College. Junior Aaron Hill of Rockhurst and Cameron Smith of Washington (Mo.) complete the College Division third team.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director..
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
