Doug Hauschild to Receive CoSIDA’s 2009 Bob Kenworthy Award
Tuscaloosa, Ala. – University of Dayton Sports Information Director Doug Hauschild, the dean of Atlantic 10 Conference SIDs with 27 years of service, has been named the recipient of the 2009 Bob Kenworthy Community Service Award by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) at the organization’s annual workshop June 24 in San Antonio, Texas. The award is presented annually to a CoSIDA member for civic involvement and accomplishments outside of the sports information office.
Although he spent 1981-83 as the head softball coach at UD and still holds the school record for career winning percentage, Hauschild has made his mark by recording history instead of making it. As the Director of Media Relations for the UD Division of Athletics, he serves as the primary sports contact for the football and men’s basketball programs, as well as coordinator for the UD Athletics Hall of Fame.
Hauschild, who began his career as an assistant SID at his alma mater in 1982, was elevated to his current position the following year. The 1981 University of Dayton graduate has made his alma mater one of the models for hosting events in the nations. Under Hauschild’s guidance, UD has hosted over 60 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament games. Hauschild has also served on a Dayton team that visits first-time NCAA Tournament hosts to instruct in proper ways to handle the event.
As for community service, Hauschild is second to none. He has devoted 30 years to youth coaching in four different sports, and served several terms as a league supervisor and commissioner. He has been media coordinator for the Southwest Ohio Senior Olympic six times as well as working as a volunteer with the Special Olympics for five years for their area meet. He has also been a regular on-call aphaeresis blood donor since the late ‘80s, and has been a finalist to donate bone marrow as part of the American Red Cross Bone Marrow Registry.
Respected by his peers as well as the media, Hauschild and the University of Dayton were honored by the Football Writers Association of America in 1990 with a Press Box Merit Award given for outstanding press box working services.
More than 35 former student workers in the Dayton Sports Information Office have gone on to careers at the college and professional levels.
