CoSIDA Board Call Minutes - August 6, 2009

CoSIDA Board Call Minutes - August 6, 2009

President Justin Doherty did a roll call.

I.  Doherty discussed with the board the retirement of Ed Carpenter as Director of Marketing for CoSIDA. There was discussion to determine the best way to move forward and Doherty said he would work out some details to bring back to the board.

II.  Executive Director John Humenik asked each Board liaison to call their respective committee chairs at least once a month during the coming year. He said goals and objectives from each committee are due August 14.

III.  Humenik talked briefly about the organization of CoSIDA fundraising for the coming year and said that he would go through the assignments and get that out to the Board as soon as possible.

IV.  Humenik discussed board duties and responsibilities and asked that board members send him any additions or corrections that need to be made for their position.

V.  Humenik talked about the development of a NC4S committee. CoSIDA now has a partnership with the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NC4S) and wants to encourage the inclusion of Athletics Communications Directors in training and on the management teams at their respective institutions. Humenik said there are free clinics and presentations taking place across the country and CoSIDA needs to make sure that its membership is aware of when and where they are taking place and the importance of attending.

VI. Humenik discussed several initiatives that CoSIDA has begun in the College Division to be proactive. Working with the leaders of the College Management Advisory Committee as well as Presidents of D II and D III-SIDA, letters were sent to the national athletic directors association, commissioner and management groups  on the College Division level. The letters stated that CoSIDA, as an organization and on the divisional levels, wants to be a resource in discussions that concern communication-based issues.

VII. Humenik said he had sent a letter to Rosa Gatti at ESPN to begin discussions about the contract for the Academic All-America program, which expires in June 2010.

VIII. Humenik said that Dick Enberg has tentatively agreed to emcee the 2009 Academic All-America presentation in San Francisco, possibly on July 6.  The board also discussed briefly the possibility of having a joint Hall of Fame banquet with CoSIDA's Hall of Fame and Academic All-America Hall of Fame.

IX. Humenik asked First Vice President Larry Dougherty if he could begin work on a logo for the San Francisco Convention and he said that he would find someone to do it.

X.  Humenik gave a review of his trip to Los Angeles to address the Pac 10 PR Directors and to Dallas to talk with the Division 1-A Athletics Directors Association. While there, he also visited with the leadership of FOX Sports Interactive, a CoSIDA corporate partner. In addition, Humenik has been invited to address  the Division 1-A Athletics Directors Association in Dallas on Sept. 28th.
XI. Dougherty said he had talked to Dennis O'Donnell in regards to developing a skeleton of a program for the San Francisco Convention and a possible keynote speaker.

XII. Third Vice President Tom DiCamillo said he plans to move the timelines for the CoSIDA awards up significantly. He said he was also working with junior and community colleges to get them more involved in CoSIDA. He said he hoped  to improve communications with the group and increase their membership within CoSIDA.

XIII. Communications Director Barb Kowal said she had a great meeting in Syracuse with Jamie Joss and ICS. She said they were looking at having a new website design by the end of the year.

XIV. Kowal said after looking at the Academic All-America award fulfillment program, it is very important to streamline the process and she is developing some strategies to do that.

XV. Kowal said she had already had good response from several CoSIDA committees in regards to providing information for the website. The New Media Technology committee has already provided several articles.

XVI. Treasurer Dave Wohlhueter said CoSIDA had gotten $15,000 back from Awards.com in money that had been overpaid in the past. He said an additional $2,500 was still coming.

XVII. Wohlhueter said 2009-10 memberships were coming in very slowly. He said he felt it was due to the Convention registration and membership registration being two separate processes.

XVIII. Secretary Jeff Hodges said post cards to all organizations listed in the CoSIDA Directory had been mailed asking them to update their information online. It also gave a link to join CoSIDA. He said the Annual Report was near completion.

The call was adjourned.
